history

The Nordmark sports field was built in 1907 under the direction of Ferdinand Hurtzig as a municipal sports and playground . In the following years it was not only used as a sports field, horse racing track and race track, but from 1908 to 1927 it was also used as an airfield by the Association for Motorized Airship Travel in the Nordmark (VML). In 1910, he built an airship hangar on the site . At that time, there was a facility for producing hydrogen at the imperial shipyard. The first air show in the German Reich was organized by the Kieler Verkehrsverein on June 28, 1908 during the Kiel Week on the Nordmarksportfeld. The only competitor, the Dane Jakob Ellehammer , received the price of 5000 gold marks for jumping 47 meters in the air with his flying machine .

During the National Socialist era, the northern parade ground was used for NSDAP events . As part of the final rally of the NSDAP for the state election in Prussia in April 1932, Adolf Hitler came to Kiel and spoke to 50,000 people on the Nordmarksportfeld as part of a paid event. On May 7, 1933, he gave another speech at the same place.

The construction costs amounted to 80,000 marks . In the spring of 1912, the hall was lengthened to 170 meters and the volume was expanded to 68,000 m³ with a floor area of 2975 m².
