The Neuwittenbek – Kiel Schusterkrug railway was opened on October 13, 1923 as the Neuwittenbek – Voßbrook small railway; it has been used for freight traffic since October 23, 1923.
operator
On August 1, 1947, the port and transport company of the city of Kiel took over management of the line. On March 1, 1953, the management switched to Maschinenbau Kiel , only to be transferred back to the port and transport company on June 7, 1960 .
The extension to the MaK factory (now Vossloh) in Kiel - Friedrichsort is a non-public siding executed. The line was built to connect the MaK plant , which was then part of the DWK, to the rail network. The locomotives were previously brought by DWK to Kiel Central Station by ferry.
Seehafen Kiel GmbH & Co. KG , which emerged from the port and transport company of the state capital Kiel , has been the owner of the route since 1996. The Schusterkrug – Friedrichsort line has been a connecting railway since 2006 .

Routing
The route begins at Neuwittenbek station on the Kiel – Flensburg railway line . The former Rathmannsdorf loading point follows. Test drives of brand-new locomotives are often held on the section to Altenholz .
After a right-hand bend, the train reaches the Schusterkrug loading station (with loading ramp), which is part of the Holtenau district. Directly behind it the route leads into the former military area Vossbrook. There is a hairpin here in which the locomotives have to move.
After leaving the former military site, the track runs right along the road and passes the Lindenau shipyard's loading point.
After passing through Friedrichsort, the train arrives at the former Vossloh factory site.
