The Kiel – Schönberger Strand railway line was built by Lenz & Co GmbH as the Kiel – Schönberger Railway ( KSE for short , popularly known as Hein Schönberg ) and went into operation in 1897 as a small railway . It connects the state capital of Schleswig-Holstein , Kiel , with the Baltic seaside resort Schönberger Strand . Its length is around 24 kilometers today.

Route description

Kiel-Oppendorf train station - barrier post until 2011

The route runs from Kiel via Gaarden Süd (closed), Kiel schools on Langsee , Ellerbek , Wellingdorf, Oppendorf , Schönkirchen , Landgraben, Muxall, Trensahl, Hagen, Probsteierhagen , Passade, Fiefbergen and Schönberg (Holstein) to Schönberger Strand.

In the first years of operation, the railway ended in Schönberg in the old station, whose access branched off from the line at km 19.6 until March 2008. The extension of the route by four kilometers from Schönberg to Schönberger Strand went into operation on June 18, 1914. The first Schönberg train station continued to be used as a freight yard.

The Schwentine is crossed between Wellingdorf and Oppendorf by means of a 12 meter high and 75 meter long bridge. After a static check, the bridge had to be renewed in October 2018.

There are no other significant engineering structures on the route.

Connecting tracks

On July 22, 1910, the 4.2 kilometer long connecting line Kiel-Oppendorf-Ostuferhafen to the east bank of the Kiel Fjord was put into operation. This branches off at km 7.149 at the Oppendorf stop and in earlier times served to supply the Howaldtswerke and the marine oil depot in Mönkeberg . After the closure of the Dietrichsdorf shipyard, the connecting railway has been supplying the coal-fired power station since 1970 and the east bank container port since the 1980s.

A second, about five kilometers longer connecting line existed from the Trensahl stop to the Laboe naval artillery arsenal . In addition, several air defense positions in the provost were opened up by rail during the Second World War . In Stakendorf and Fiefbergen there were sidings for this purpose. The resulting military importance led to greater destruction, so that operations in 1945 came to a temporary standstill.

The CFE in the post-war period

From 1953, diesel operation was started with the GDT type large-capacity diesel railcars , called Silberlachs , purchased by MaK , and from 1954 onwards, a new track connection to the Kiel – Lübeck railway line started at Kiel Central Station as the terminus. Previously, since 1911, the trains ended in the small station in Gaarden Süd, which was used jointly with the Kiel-Segeberger Eisenbahn (KSE). Despite the increasing number of passengers, however, it was no longer possible to generate a surplus. The center of operations was the Schönberg train station with a double-track locomotive shed; larger investigations were carried out in the KSE workshop in Bornhöved.

Preference share for 1000 marks of Kleinbahn-AG Kiel-Schönberg from February 4, 1905

In 1963 the railway was renamed from Kleinbahn-AG Kiel – Schönberg to Kiel – Schönberger Eisenbahn KSE (KSE was the abbreviation for the Kiel – Segeberger Kleinbahn until 1961) and in 1966 it was converted into a limited liability company in which the Deutsche Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft ( DEG) no longer held any shares. The management contract with DEG was continued for a few years. Shortly afterwards, the administration and management of the KSE was merged with the bus company Verkehrsbetriebe Kreis Plön (VKP), founded in 1965 .

In 1966 there were seven pairs of trains on Sundays, and three pairs of express trains in July and August, which only stopped in Kiel and Schönberg. When the weather was fine, in addition to the company's own vehicles, five to six rented n-cars (silver coins) from the Deutsche Bundesbahn were used. Around 600,000 passengers and 100,000 tons of goods were transported annually. The freight traffic was mainly provided by serving the Ostuferhafen and the connection to Dietrichsdorf.

MaK GDT in March 1974 in Schönberger Strand

Regular passenger traffic with the MaK railcars ended on May 31, 1975. The train pair with diesel locomotive V61 and sidecar 181 (a GDT of the former Kiel-Segeberger Kleinbahn converted into a sidecar) ran until January 16, 1981.

After that, only goods traffic to the Ostuferhafen was carried out by the VKP and the route Schönkirchen – Schönberg was used until 2006 for empty locomotives to the depot in Schönberg. With the takeover of the transport services to the Ostuferhafen by the Kiel (SK) port, VKP parted with its last railway vehicle in 2006, the V155 of the MaK G 1205 BB type .

After negotiations with the VKP in 2007 regarding the takeover or leasing of the route by the VVM from Schönberg to Schönkirchen, an agreement was reached with the LVS, the State Ministry of Transport and the VKP that VKP would manage the operation between Schönkirchen and Schönberg until further notice left. In the winter of 2007/2008, extensive repair work was carried out between the Landgraben and Passade in order to ensure that the tracks could be used for the next few years. In the course of this work, the access to the old (first) Schönberg train station was canceled in March 2008. The station area was subsequently built over with a supermarket and parking lots.

The Kiel Süd – Oppendorf section and the Oppendorf – Ostuferhafen connection have been owned by the Kiel Seaport since 2007 . The Gaarden – Oppendorf section has been leased to AKN Eisenbahn since 2014 . The section Schönberg – Schönberger Strand has been owned by the municipality of Schönberg since 1983.

From 2009 to 2012, the route from Kiel to Schönberger Strand was also used by DB Regio from July to September on selected days and times of the week (for example on the occasion of Kiel Week ) with railcars and in some cases with provided wagons from the museum railway. But since then, during the Kieler Woche, non-stop trains have been running on the route every weekend, in 2017 every two hours.

Association of traffic amateurs and museum railways V.

Since 1976, trains of the Association of Traffic Amateurs and Museum Railways (VVM) have been operating as a museum railroad on the section between Schönberg and Schönberger Strand . The inventory includes the former cars 1 and 15 of the KSE. In 1993, a museum tram was also built at the terminus at Schönberger Strand. Today, VVM is the owner of the Schönberg – Schönberger Strand section.

Future of the route

The NAH.SH (formerly "Landesweit Verkehrsservicegesellschaft LVS") planned to reactivate the Kiel – Schönberger Strand line as part of the StadtRegionalBahn Kiel project . A combined bus-train service is planned with which smaller communities can be connected to the railway stations along the route by means of feeder traffic. With 30 minutes, the journey time would be halved compared to today's bus journey times.

In the spring of 2013, a citizens' initiative was founded against the reactivation of the Kiel – Schönberger Railway. In particular, citizens from Probsteierhagen and other smaller villages in the Probstei fear poor connections to their places, increased traffic noise and an increasing risk of accidents. This is offset by a planned bus-train concept, the bus line of which should continue to open up the smaller towns.

The state-wide traffic service company Schleswig-Holstein (LVS) announced in mid-April 2013 that it had largely completed the preliminary draft plans for reactivating the route. The 30 million euro expansion is to begin in autumn 2013. The top speed is to be increased to 80 km / h, sometimes to 100 km / h. To do this, two sections must be re-routed. The route is to be equipped with three crossing stations. After the expansion was completed, trains should run every hour between Kiel Central Station and Schönberger Strand from December 2016.

On August 30, 2013, the new stop in Kiel Schulen am Langsee was opened at the level crossing on Preetzer Strasse, and scheduled traffic with a morning train began on September 2. It should be reactivated as early as October 2012 in order to shift school traffic on the section of the inner city - regional technical education center (RBZ) to rail. However, this measure could not be implemented in time.

At the beginning of 2014, AKN , based in Kaltenkirchen, took over the railway infrastructure for the line from Kiel-Gaarden to Kiel-Oppendorf from Seehafen Kiel GmbH. The background is the planned launch of operations on the route to the beach Schoenberger by NAH.SH . The train services are to be provided by DB Regio. For this purpose, two new stops will be built in Ellerbek and Oppendorf, and technical renovations of the route with an electronic signal box (ESTW), new signaling technology in Oppendorf and new safety technology for the level crossings with traffic lights with half barriers will take place.

On August 30, 2016, the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Ellerbek stop on the railway line to Schönberg took place.

Oppendorf stop

During the Kiel Week in June 2017, the partially relocated and new 76 cm high platform stops in Kiel-Ellerbek and Kiel-Oppendorf were put into operation. Since September 4, 2017, trains have been running regularly from Kiel Hbf to Kiel-Oppendorf again. The trains are driven by DB Regio . The route is operated every hour from Monday to Saturday.

In March 2019 it became known that the further expansion between Oppendorf and Schönberg would involve previously unknown costs. The substructure of the route consists of sand and not a gravel bed, so that this entire substructure would have to be replaced. This would increase the planned costs from 35 to 50 million euros. The preparatory work for reactivating the line is almost complete. According to the plan approval decision, the expansion work for stops and track works would start in autumn 2020. The first trains could run every hour from 2022.

A new investigation showed that the decisive benefit-cost ratio is 1.2 (previously 1.3) and is therefore positive with regard to the grants. According to the appraiser, further savings options were considered. Two trains should be enough to operate the traffic on the 25-kilometer route. The use of modern railcars, which the country would like to purchase as battery trains, has a cost-reducing effect. The experts also assume that more than the previously calculated 2200 passengers may board each day.

Worth mentioning

The Schönberger Strand station briefly became Lübeck's main station for the shooting of the television series Die Buddenbrooks . A platform roof is a film set that has remained standing to this day. The Schönberger Strand train station served as the location for the television adaptation of the radio comedy series Stenkelfeld .
