In the north, an industrial area expands the area of the Ostuferhafen for port and logistics-related commercial settlement . The water police in Kiel has a branch at the Ostuferhafen.
use
Cargo port
The Ostuferhafen is Kiel's largest freight port. It is operated by Seehafen Kiel GmbH & Co. KG . The Ostuferhafen has eleven ship berths with LoLo and RoRo systems. It has a KLV terminal (combined cargo traffic), which offers the option of trimodal transshipment (three-part transport chain ), as well as free storage areas, various warehouses and service buildings. The central gate is part of a port logistics and information system that is primarily used for order execution and parking space management. In Kiel, ferry traffic to Russia and the Baltic States is concentrated in the largest part of the port, i.e. the Ostuferhafen.
In 2004, a transshipment terminal for combined road / rail freight traffic was built in the Ostuferhafen , through which up to 22,000 units can be handled annually. The logistics location has 25,000 m² of hall space and is equipped with handling technology.
Cruise terminal
Since 2013, Kiel's largest berth for cruise ships (up to 400 m in length) has also been located in the Ostuferhafen . The 110 m long pavilion set up to handle the passengers was inaugurated on June 2, 2014. With the help of the state of Schleswig-Holstein, the Kiel seaport invested around 4.5 million euros in the ferry terminal. Due to the poorer situation for the passengers, the berth in the Ostuferhafen was previously only used if the berths at Ostseekai and Norwaykai were occupied. For 2015, 18 calls by cruise ships are planned in the Ostuferhafen.
perspective
A north expansion including an available industrial area is planned; additional expansions are intended.

history
In 1985, the Ostuferhafen was built on the site that Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft had previously given up. The Cellpap company in particular contributed to the successful start of the Ostuferhafen; Cellpap specialized in the Scandinavian wood and paper trade. The remains of the Kilian submarine bunker, which had been declared a “monument”, were located on the former HDW site until 2000 . They were removed in the course of the expansion of the Ostuferhafen. From 1992 to 2002, the handling in the Ostuferhafen rose from 100,000 t to almost 1 million tonnes, which is mainly due to freight to the Baltic states and Russia.
