Cruise ships

The Ostseekai is regularly called by major cruise ships. For example, the AIDAluna , the AIDAcara , the MSC Meraviglia , the Costa Pacifica , the Mein Schiff 2 , the Astor and many other cruise ships are regular guests in Kiel at the Ostseekai. The largest cruise ship to date in Kiel and the Ostseekai was the Regal Princess on July 10, 2015. On April 29, 2017, the MSC Fantasia, the longest ship to date, docked at the Ostseekai for the first time.

On June 9, 2019, climate activists from the smashcruiseshit group prevented the cruise ship Zuiderdam from sailing for over 6 hours. They cruised with boats in front of the bow, climbed on mooring ropes, the bulbous bow and a crane on a nearby construction site. The reason for the protest was the high level of pollutant emissions from cruise ships and the often miserable working conditions on board, some of which cost less than € 2 / hour.

Development of the quay

The Oslo quay in 1966

Oslo quay

Until the new construction and renovation of the Ostseekai in 2007, the Oslo quay was located here. The Oslo quay was Kiel's first larger ferry port and was inaugurated in 1961. The ground consists of rubble and a 2000 m² steel plate.

Years Line's ships , Color Line from 1990 , operated on the Oslo quay for Oslo. There was also a ferry connection to Bagenkop on the Danish island of Langeland , which was finally closed in 2000. The Stena Line ferries to Sweden also left the Oslo quay until the Schwedenkai was built in 1982.

Ostseekai

After the Color Line moved into its new terminal at the Norwegenkai on the eastern side of the fjord in 1997, the Oslo-Kai was expanded and converted into a cruise terminal. The terminal was funded by the "Regional Program 2000" of the State of Schleswig-Holstein. The investment measure at that time amounted to a total of 28.5 million euros. After a six-month construction period, the Ostseekai cruise terminal was opened in 2007.

In November 2018 the foundation stone was laid for the 10 million euro second terminal building for cruise passengers with a size of 3700 m² at northern berth 28, which was completed in March 2020. Furthermore, the construction of a shore power plant began in 2019 , which is also due to be completed in 2020.
