The MSC Fantasia is a cruise ship of the Swiss shipping company MSC Cruises , a subsidiary of the Mediterranean Shipping Company . The MSC Fantasia was at the time she was first commissioned a survey of 137,936 gross tonnage , the largest passenger ship ever built for a European shipping company and is currently the ninth largest cruise ship type worldwide.

Construction and commissioning

The ship was ordered under reserve together with the MSC Splendida in June 2004 from the French shipyard ALSTOM Chantiers de l'Atlantique in Saint-Nazaire; the ship was firmly ordered on November 14, 2005. The ship was built under the hull number A33 at the traditional French shipyard Chantiers de l'Atlantique . The project development was in the hands of Studio De Jorio Design International in Genoa. The steel cutting ceremony took place on September 9, 2006, and the mint ceremony on April 11, 2007. August 30, 2007 was the day of the "moving dock". After the fairway was deepened to over eight meters, the so-called “floating”, the technical launching , took place on February 6, 2008 . Two days later, the ship was moved to the equipment quay using eight tugs . On July 17, 2008, the swimming and driving tests began in the sea. After a construction period of around three years, during which around 4,000 people were employed on the project, the ship was delivered to the client on December 9, 2008. On December 18, 2008, the ship was christened in Naples by the Italian actress Sophia Loren . After the baptism, the ship was transferred to Genoa.

The first cruise of the new flagship of the MSC fleet, which has 18 decks, 14 of which are accessible to passengers, began as a Christmas cruise on December 20, 2008 in Genoa, the ports of call were Rhodes, Alexandria, Messina, Naples, Genoa.

Sister ships

The MSC Fantasia has an identical sister ship called MSC Splendida , which was also christened by Sophia Loren on July 12, 2009 in Barcelona . The maiden voyage took place from July 13th to 18th, 2009. In May 2012 the MSC Divina added to the fleet; the ship was christened on May 26, 2012 in Marseille . At 139,072 GT, she is slightly larger than her previous sister ships. The MSC Preziosa , which was originally to be used as Phenicia for the Libyan state shipping company ( General National Maritime Transport Company ) , was added to the MSC fleet in March 2013. Like the MSC Divina , it is measured at 139,072 GT.

Contemporary history

It was planned that the responsible ministers, heads of government and representatives of the world's most important industrialized countries would meet on the cruise ship from 8 to 10 July 2009 as part of the G8 summit in Italy. You should go on board at La Maddalena / Italy. The G8 summit was later moved by the Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi to L'Aquila in Abruzzo , where a severe earthquake in early April 2009 left thousands homeless.

Between 2009 and 2010, filming of the series Um Himmels Willen took place on board the ship .

commitment

In the winter of 2016/2017, MSC Fantasia drove in the Arabian Gulf from Dubai to destinations in Qatar, Bahrain, the UAE and Oman. In the summer of 2017, the ship is sailing in Northern Europe and offers two routes from Kiel , one to Norway and Denmark, and the other to Estonia, Sweden and Russia. The route then leads into the Mediterranean Sea in autumn 2017. In winter 2017/2018 it will be used in the eastern Caribbean and will visit the Lesser Antilles from Fort-de-France , Martinique .

Incidents

On March 5, 2009, a storm with wind gusts of up to 100 km / h swept across the Balearic -Insel Mallorca . The bow cables (or their anchoring) of the MSC Fantasia lying in the port of Palma could not withstand the wind load and broke when passengers were about to leave the ship for shore leave. Because the ship drifted off the pier, the gangway came loose, fell about 15 meters into the water and tore an 80-year-old passenger from Egypt with it. The man hit his head on the hull and was seriously injured. Three members of the ship's crew immediately jumped into the water to save the man. The four men were taken to the hospital.

On the night of January 16, 2016, the ship was suspected of having been attacked by explosives and there were suspicious passengers on board. The ship coming from Haifa then called at Souda Bay instead of Iraklion .

Footnotes

  1. Larger are the Queen Mary 2 with 148,528 GT, the three ships of the Freedom class Freedom of the Seas , Liberty of the Seas and Independence of the Seas with 154,407 GT each, the Norwegian Epic with 155,873 GT, the ships of the Oasis class Oasis of the Seas and Allure of the Seas with a measurement of 225,282 GT each, the ships of the Royal Class Regal Princess (ship, 2014) , Royal Princess and Britannia with 142,000 GT each, the ships of the breakaway class Norwegian Breakaway and Norwegian Getaway with 144,000 GT each, the Breakaway Plus class Norwegian Escape with 163,000 GT each and the Quantum class Quantum of the Seas and Anthem of the Seas with 168,600 GT each.
  2. In contemporary documents names such as Alstom Marine Werft , Aker Yard France or STX Shipbuilding Co. appear as the shipyard . This is always the Chantiers de l'Atlantique shipyard , which has had different owners or shareholders in recent years. At the end of 2008, the following ownership structure applies: The Korean shipbuilding group STX holds 50 percent of the shares, 33.35 percent is held by the French state, which with this partial nationalization of the shipyard has secured the blocking minority and thus also the right to have a say (after all, this shipyard is the only one in France on which the fuselage of an aircraft carrier can be keeled), the remaining 16.65 percent is held by the industrial group Alstom.
  3. The first structural element of a ship is cut out of sheet steel. Traditionally, this is done as part of a solemn ceremony.

  5. At the mint ceremony, according to nautical tradition, two gold coins, one from the shipping company and the other from the shipyard, are welded into the keel of the ship. One of the coins was won by the shipowner's wife, Rafaela Aponte, as a prize for first place in a piano competition at the Geneva University of Music.
  6. The keel was laid block by block and thus complete. The ship was pushed to the end of the dock, which is closer and deeper to the sea. The complete assembly of the ship took place here.
  7. When the hull is completed, the dock will be flooded. The ship is now swimming for the first time. A launch in the conventionally known sense is no longer carried out on such large ships.
  8. The motors, the kitchens, all safety devices and systems for electrics and water were tested.
  9. This message turned out to be a safety measure, in reality the sister ship MSC Splendida was intended as the conference venue.
