The ship was built in 2002 for the Greek shipping company Festival Cruises at the Chantiers de l'Atlantique shipyard in Saint-Nazaire . It was put into service under the name European Stars and, like its sister ship European Vision (now MSC Armonia ) built in 2001, operated until the shipping company went bankrupt in 2004. Other similar ships are the MSC Lirica and MSC Opera as well as the shorter Costa neoRiviera by Costa Crociere , which was also built for Festival Cruises under the name Mistral . The European Stars offered 1,554 passengers in 777 cabins.
On July 16, 2004, the Italian shipping company MSC took over the ship and named it MSC Sinfonia . The MSC Sinfonia is mainly used for cruises in the Mediterranean , but also to South America .
From January 12, 2015 to March 25, 2015, the MSC Sinfonia was extended to 275 m by the Italian shipyard Fincantieri in Palermo and equipped with more modern technology and new possibilities for entertaining guests. As part of the so-called “Renaissance program” of the shipping company , the maximum permissible number of passengers was increased to 2680 by adding around 200 additional cabins for both her and all other ships in the Lirica class.
