The MSC Splendida is a cruise ship owned by the Swiss shipping company MSC Cruises , a subsidiary of the Mediterranean Shipping Company .

Construction and commissioning

The ship was ordered under reserve together with the MSC Fantasia in June 2004 from the French shipyard ALSTOM Chantiers de l'Atlantique in Saint-Nazaire; the ship was firmly ordered on November 14, 2005. Construction began on April 12 at the shipyard, which has since been renamed Aker Yards. The ship was laid down on October 24, 2007 and floated in the building dock on July 20, 2008. The delivery took place on July 2nd, 2009 by the shipyard, which has since been renamed STX France. The ship was christened on July 12, 2009 in Barcelona by the Italian actress Sophia Loren , who was already godmother of several MSC ships. The MSC Splendida is the sister ship of the MSC Fantasia , which was christened on December 18, 2008 . At the time of their commissioning, they were the largest passenger ships ever built for a European shipping company and at that time belonged to the third largest type of cruise ship in the world.

Sister ships

The MSC Splendida has three sister ships. The lead ship, the MSC Fantasia , entered service in 2008. MSC Divina followed in 2012. In 2013 the MSC Preziosa was put into service.

Furnishing

The ship has 18 decks, 13 of which are accessible to passengers. The decks are named after painters and sculptors.

Mission history

In the terrorist attack on March 18, 2015 in Tunis , twelve passengers were killed on board during a shore excursion.
In 2015 the MSC Splendida was the longest cruise ship to ever dock in Amsterdam.

Cruising areas

After her Mediterranean season, the MSC Splendida was extensively rebuilt in Marseille for the Asian market in November 2017. She arrived in Dubai at the beginning of December , where she set out on one-week cruises to Abu Dhabi, Bahrain, Qatar, Sir Bani Yas Island and Oman in the 2017/2018 and 2018/2019 winter seasons . She spent the summer months of 2018 and 2019 in China, Japan and South Korea.

Since the MSC Bellissima , built for the Asian market, will operate these routes in 2020, the Splendida will return to Europe. After it was rebuilt for the European market in April as part of a shipyard stay at Blohm and Voss in Hamburg, it will be stationed with the MSC Meraviglia in Kiel for the summer and from there to Norway, Great Britain and the Baltic States .

In the autumn of 2020, it will travel from Genoa to Marseille, Barcelona, Casablanca, Lisbon and Málaga.

During the winter she is stationed in Pointe-à-Pitre (Guadeloupe) and Fort-de-France (Martinique) and sets out from there on two different one-week cruises to the Lesser Antilles . The two routes can be combined into 14-day Caribbean cruises.
