history
The company, founded in Antwerp, Belgium, in 1828, had a simple mission: to provide ship insurers with up-to-date information on premiums in trading centers, as well as the exact condition of ships and materials used to determine confidence levels. In 1830 an office was opened in Paris. As early as 1833, local business activity had increased so much that the company's headquarters were relocated to the French capital.
With the development of the Industrial Revolution, the company broadened its range of services. The use of iron and steel in shipbuilding made it necessary to check the materials on site. In 1910 a new service was introduced with the " material control ", the task of which was to examine all materials that had to do with industrial building materials, diesel engines, tractors and the like, as well as the factories themselves. In 1922 the French government entrusted Bureau Veritas with the official control of airworthiness certificates in civil aviation (the expertise acquired in the maritime sector has already proven to be extremely valuable). The new Aeronautical Service introduced comprehensive regulations based on regular controls and carried out according to certain rules.
Similarly, the demand from insurance companies for regular checks on buses and trucks in France led to the establishment of Automobile Services in 1927. With the increasing number of accidents during the construction boom after the First World War, insurers quickly realized that they were taking the risks without going first Can no longer cover controls. Bureau Veritas reacted again to this changed market situation and in 1929 founded the Control Service for Buildings & Civil Engineering. In 1932 Bureau Veritas opened its own laboratories in Levallois-Perret near Paris to carry out metallurgical and chemical analyzes as well as testing building materials.
Between 1980 and 1990 Bureau Veritas founded several new subsidiaries in order to be able to react optimally to special requirements, one of them was BVQI, today Bureau Veritas Certification.
In 1988 quality requirements and ISO certification became key issues for many companies. There followed an increasing demand for independent third parties to perform system certification. In 1995, two new institutional investors, CGIP and Poincaré Investissement, brought a breath of fresh air to Bureau Veritas activities.
