Arkema is a French company based in Colombes .

The company is active in the manufacture of various petrochemical products. Arkema has around 20,000 employees. The company was formed in 2004 as a result of a spin-off from the French company Atofina , which emerged from the chemical divisions of the two companies TotalFina and Elf .

The subsidiary Altuglas is a large PMMA manufacturer.

history

In 1983 the Atochem company was created through the reorganization of all chemical activities from Elf Aquitaine and the takeover of ATO Chimie (Aquitaine Total Organico), Chloé Chimie and, in part, PCUK (Produits Chimiques Ugine Kuhlmann). A few years later, in 1990, Orkem was split up and mostly taken over by Atochem, only the specialty chemicals went to Total. In addition, Atochem took over Montedison's hydroperoxide division in the same year .

After the merger of Total and Elf in 1999, the chemical activities were outsourced as Atofina one year later. Arkema was founded in 2004. The agrochemical industry was sold to the Indian company United Phosphorus in 2007 as CEREXAGRI .

In 2012, the PVC division with production facilities in Berre-l'Étang (PVC), Balan (PVC), Saint-Fons (PVC), Saint-Auban (PVC), Fos-sur-Mer (vinyl chloride), Lavéra (chloromethane, Vinyl chloride) and Vauvert (sole) were sold to Klesch for a symbolic € 1 , which went bankrupt in March 2013.

The employees and residents were evacuated. On August 31, there were two explosions caused by the interruption of the power supply to the cooling of a production facility. The water in the plant was almost two meters high. The evacuation zone had a radius of about two kilometers. In August 2017, 57 employees worked in this plant.
