The Bibliothèque Alsatique du Crédit Mutuel (dt. About the library of Alsatian documents of the Crédit Mutuel ) in Strasbourg is a public library , which is maintained by the French cooperative bank Crédit Mutuel .

founding

The journalist Antoine Gardner (1903–1981) from Guebwiller , who had a great interest in the history of Alsace , established a private library of about 4,000 books in Alsatian , German and French on subjects related to history, geography and the like Customs in Alsace concern. These include classic works from the 18th and 19th centuries such as those by Johann Daniel Schöpflin , André Philippe Grandidier , Johann Gottfried Schweighäuser and Johann Andreas Silbermann .

This collection was bought in 1972 by the Crédit Mutuel bank, which housed it in its Bischenberg training center in Bischoffsheim . This library has been open to the public since the beginning. In 1992 it was housed in the main building of Crédit Mutuel until it was finally moved to its current location in 1997 - Haus Herrenschmidt, 34 rue du Wacken, 67913 Strasbourg.

Duration

Over the years, the collection has been expanded to include new and historical works, so that it now comprises around 41,000 books (as of June 2016), the oldest of which date from the 15th century (6 incunabula ).
