The company was founded in 1980 by Jean-Jacques Poutrel and Michel Malhouitre. Ingenico manufactures chip card readers for cashless payment processing and develops software solutions for online payments in the field of electronic commerce . In the 2017 financial year, the company generated sales of EUR 2.51 billion with around 7,500 employees. Ingenico Payment Services is a German subsidiary of Ingenicos . In October 2018 Ingenico announced a partnership with the Swedish payment service provider Trustly .

Takeover by Worldline

On February 3, 2020, the French competitor Worldline announced a public takeover offer for Ingenico. Ingenico is valued by the offer at 7.8 billion euros. The merger will create the fourth largest digital payment provider in the world. The German savings bank group, which together with Ingenico owns the Payone joint venture in Germany, welcomed the merger.
