International Association of Classification Societies

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The International Association of Classification Societies (abbreviated: IACS) or International Association of Classification Societies is the most important international association of classification societies . The umbrella organization is based in London .

The IACS goes back to the recommendations made in the International Load Line Ordinance of 1930, in which closer cooperation between the classification society was sought for the purpose of standardizing the respective assessment bases for the Load Line Ordinance.

In the course of implementing this resolution, the Registro Italiano Navale acted in 1939 as the first host of a conference of the American Bureau of Shipping , Bureau Veritas , Det Norske Veritas , Germanischer Lloyd , Lloyd's Register of Shipping and Nippon Kaiji Kyōkai . Another conference in 1955 initially concluded with the establishment of working groups, which finally led to the establishment of the IACS with seven members in 1968. In the following year, the merger achieved the status of advisor to the International Maritime Organization . As such, the IACS is still the only non-governmental advisory organization there that is allowed to develop and apply valid rules.
