history

RINA was founded in Genoa in 1861 under the name Registro Italiano as a private law foundation by local shipowners and shipowners to end their dependence on foreign classification societies and to reduce insurance costs. The Italian state recognized the Registro Italiano in 1870 as a non-profit organization and from 1881 allowed the assumption of state tasks. In 1910 the company merged with the Registro Nazionale and was renamed Registro Nazionale Italiano , and after the First World War it became Registro Navale Italiano . In 1919 important cooperation agreements were signed with the British Corporation Register of Shipping and Aircraft , the American Bureau of Shipping and the Japanese Teikoku Kaiji Kyokai . In 1921 Veritas Adriatico was taken over and the company's official headquarters were relocated to Rome . The administration remained in Genoa. In addition, two technical departments were created, one in Genoa for the Tyrrhenian Sea and one in Trieste for the Adriatic . At the same time one was active in the inland shipping, between 1927 and 1938 also in the aviation . For the latter reason, the company was given the new name RINA - Registro Italiano Navale ed Aeronautico . The responsibilities for aviation were given in 1938 to the new Registro Aeronautico Italiano (RAI) , which in turn was taken over in 1997 by the aviation authority ENAC . The abbreviation RINA was retained, however. After the difficult phase of World War II and the post-war period had been overcome, RINA rejoined itself in international organizations and expanded rapidly. In 1968 RINA founded the International Association of Classification Societies with six other classification societies . In 1998, RINA lost its monopoly position in Italy due to European legal norms , which necessitated considerable restructuring measures and diversification of the company's activities. In addition to its own offices abroad, the company also participated in a number of companies there. In 1999 the operational areas were combined in a joint stock company under the name RINA SpA, which after an internal reorganization essentially consists of three departments: Divisione Navale, Divisione Certificazione e Servizi and Divisione Industry .

Ships that have been measured by the Registro Italiano Navale bear the letters RI on the loading lines (Plimsoll mark) amidships.
