history

Lloyd's Register owes its name and foundation of the coffee house of Edward Lloyd , in the 17th century in the Tower Street , which was of merchants, ship insurers and others who had to do with seafaring, frequented. The owner Edward Lloyd assisted them in exchanging information by regularly distributing a printed list of information about ships. Apart from their mutual beginnings in Lloyd's coffee house, Lloyd's Register has no connection to the international insurance market Lloyd's of London .

In 1760 the Register Society was founded by the coffeehouse's customers and the first Register of Shipping (Green Book) was issued to give merchants and insurers an idea of the condition of the vessels they chartered or insured. The highest classification "A1", which became proverbial, first appeared in the edition of 1775–1776. In 1799 the Register of Shipping was expanded to include the Shipsowners Register (Red Book). After the Lloyds Underwriters Register had been added in 1829 , the Lloyds Register of British and Foreign Shipping followed from 1834 , which developed into the worldwide standard. The register, with information on all merchant ships with more than 100 tons that have their own propulsion system, is published annually. After the merger with Fairplay Publications Limited in 2001, the publication was carried out by Lloyd's Register - Fairplay .

LR classification society

The Lloyd's Register Society is the first and oldest classification society that established rules for the safe building and construction of ships. Of the 29,763 steam and motor ships over 100 tons that went to sea in 1939, 13,694 had been built under the supervision of the Register Society.

today

Lloyd's Register has changed and expanded fundamentally over the past 250 years with the industrial revolutions - from a time when steam engines were developed for mechanical production to today's digital and cyber technology. The latter developments are also reflected in the takeover of Senergy, an integrated energy service provider, in 2013 and Nettitude, a cyber security specialist, in 2018. Lloyd's Register has built a portfolio of digital, data and software solutions including greenfencetm, RTAMO and Seasafe.

For around 150 years, Lloyd's Register has been testing and certifying safety-critical products, systems and processes in Germany in accordance with nationally and internationally recognized codes, standards and regulations. Lloyd's Register test engineers support manufacturers and system operators in minimizing their risk by helping them to ensure quality and precision and to comply with legal requirements. Lloyd's Register helps exporting manufacturers to open up new market access with more than 60 accreditations worldwide and as a notified body in Europe. In addition, Lloyd's Register is recognized as an approved monitoring body (ZÜS).
