title Business letter - single forms and continuous forms
Brief description: Business letter; form
Latest edition 1995-05 (withdrawn)
ISO -

The now withdrawn DIN standard DIN 676 contained the design rules for preprinted business letters . It gave precise dimensions for the prints on individual letter sheets in A4 format (DIN 476-1) as well as on continuous forms according to DIN 9771 and stipulated the order of the information. The purpose of the standard was to facilitate correspondence.

The standard defined two different forms (A and B):

A   for business letters with a small letterhead
B   for business letters with extended letterhead

The main components for the layout according to DIN 676 were:

  • letterhead at the top (name and possibly logogram of the sender),
  • Postal address of the sender (27 or 45 mm below the upper edge of the sheet) and below the field for the address of the recipient, matched to window envelope according to DIN 680,
  • Communication information such as reference character line or information block ,
  • Fold marks on the left edge of the sheet , at different heights for both letterhead versions, and a warning sign to indicate to the typist that only nine lines are free,
  • Hole mark (in the middle of the letterhead on the left edge at 148.5 mm) and
  • the business details (e.g. HR number, managing director or bank account details ) at the bottom of the form.

DIN 676 has been withdrawn since April 2011 and is included in a revised version in the new 2011 edition of DIN 5008 .
