Rey Ángel Martínez Mendive (born May 13, 1980 in Havana ) is a former Cuban football player and current assistant coach.
Athletic career
Beginnings in Cuba
Playing for the selection of the capital province of Havana since 1998 , the 1.84 m tall striker Martínez , later called “boom-boom”, won the Cuban championship that year and 2001 with his team . In the championship year 1998 he contributed to the success with seven goals scored. He met nine times in 2000/01. In the seasons 1999/2000 and 2001/2002 (4 goals) he also won two runner-up championships with the club. Martínez was active both for the U-23 selection of his home country and for the Cuban national soccer team , for which he completed 17 international matches until 2002. He was part of his country's team at the Copa Caribe and Pan American Games .
Escape and start of professional career in the USA
Martínez left the Cuban team with his national team colleague Alberto Delgado during the CONCACAF Gold Cup in Los Angeles in January 2002 after they had initially asked the Cuban American National Foundation for help. Both applied for political asylum in order to stay in the US. They first settled in Miami , where an uncle Martínez lived and in whose company he could occasionally work. While Delgado and Martínez waited to receive their residence permits, they played for a season on the St. Thomas University team , as well as for local club teams. Martínez signed in June 2004 a contract with the Major League Soccer team Chicago Fire , from which he was immediately given in a swap to the Colorado Rapids . That made Martínez the first Cuban in the MLS. For the Colorado Rapids he was used in the MLS in seven league encounters and one playoff game. From 2005 to 2008 he played in the USL First Division for the Rochester Rhinos , where he played 48 regular season games as well as seven playoff and six cup games. In August 2008, he joined the Carolina RailHawks for the remainder of the season . In 2009 he went to the Real Maryland Monarchs , for whom he played five times in the USL Second Division . Also in 2009 he was in the ranks of Atlético de San Juan FC , where he was used four times in the Puerto Rico Soccer League .
Indoor soccer
From autumn 2005 Martínez played professional indoor soccer for the first time , initially in the Major Indoor Soccer League for the St. Louis Steamers. With the Baltimore Blast he won the 2008 MISL championship. Until the end of his active career in 2014, he played in the Xtreme Soccer League and the Major Indoor Soccer League for the teams of the New Jersey Ironmen, the Philadelphia Kixx, the Rochester Lancers and, at the end of his active career, the Syracuse Silver Knights, where he acted as a player-coach. Since the beginning of the 2014/2015 season, Martínez has been the assistant coach of the Rochester Lancers indoor soccer team, for which he was a player between 2011 and 2013.
