The St. Thomas University ( STU ) is a Roman Catholic private university in Miami Gardens , a suburb of Miami in the US state of Florida .

history

The roots of the university lie in the Universidad Católica de Santo Tomás de Villanueva in Havana , Cuba, founded in 1946 by the Augustinians . After Fidel Castro expelled the Augustinian Order of Cuba, faculty members founded Biscayne College in Miami in 1961 . 1968 was accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) ; In 1984 it was recognized as a university and renamed to today's St. Thomas University . The university is supported by the Archdiocese of Miami .
