The Indian Register of Shipping (abbreviated: IRS, German: Indian Ship Register) based in Mumbai is a global classification society .

The company was founded in India in 1975 and has been working in the field of ship classification ever since. In the years of its existence, the IRS expanded from the survey activities exclusively related to ships to related areas, such as on / offhire surveys for charterers or ship owners, damage surveys or the classification of offshore structures. The IRS has been working with an ISO 9001- compliant quality management system since 1996 and on June 22, 2010 the Indian Register of Shipping was accepted as a full member of the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS).

Ships measured by the Indian Register of Shipping have the letters IR on the loading lines (Plimsoll mark) amidships.
