The ship was built at Aker Yards shipyard in Turku, Finland. She was appointed on September 30, 2004. On October 17, 2005, the ship was laid down and left the building dock on August 4, 2006. On April 18, 2007, the Liberty of the Seas was delivered to Royal Caribbean International . She sailed under the flag of the Bahamas with her home port in Nassau .
After delivery in spring 2007, the ship was used for year-round cruises in the Caribbean . It has been used in the Mediterranean from Barcelona between spring and autumn since 2011, while the Caribbean remains in winter.
In 2012, one of the six main machines was equipped with scrubbers for test purposes .
