history

The Jewel of the Seas in Valletta (Malta)

The ship was built under construction number 658 at the Meyer shipyard in Papenburg . The keel was laid on November 9, 2002. The ship was delivered on April 4, 2004. The ship sailed under the flag of the Bahamas with home port Nassau . The completion of the ship took place on April 22, 2004. In May 2004 it was put into service. The maiden voyage of the ship, christened on May 7, 2004 in Southampton, began on May 8, 2004.

A major overhaul of the ship, which cost a total of £ 20 million , was completed in April 2016.

Incident 2015

In early February 2015, a fire broke out at the ship's main switch on the way to San Juan . As a result, the air conditioning failed for around five hours and the toilets flushed for around two hours.

Technical data and equipment

The ship is powered by electric motors that act on two propeller pods. Electricity is generated by a steam turbine and two gas turbines . Furthermore, two diesel generators and an emergency diesel generator were installed.

The ship has 15 decks, 13 of which are accessible to passengers. There are 1055 passenger cabins on board. 817 of them are outside cabins, 238 inside cabins. 577 of the outside cabins have their own balcony. The ship is marketed with a passenger capacity of 2112 people with double occupancy of the cabins. Some of the cabins can also be occupied by up to four people, so that the maximum passenger capacity is 2502 people.
