The Voyager of the Seas is a 311.12 m long cruise ship owned by Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. , operated by Royal Caribbean International . She entered service in November 1999 and was the largest cruise ship in the world at the time.

description

The Voyager of the Seas (development name: "Project Eagle") was the first of a total of five Voyager- class ships to be built at Kvaerner Masa-Yards (now Meyer Turku Oy) in Turku (Finland). The other ships are the Explorer of the Seas (NB 1345: 2000), Adventure of the Seas (NB 1346: 2001), Navigator of the Seas (NB 1347: 2002) and Mariner of the Seas (NB 1348: 2003).

When they were commissioned, they were the largest cruise ships in the world and were only replaced by the Cunard Line's Queen Mary 2 in March 2003 . The Voyager class is the basis for the new “Ultra-Voyager” (development designation), which has been extended by a fire compartment; the Freedom of the Seas (2006) was the largest cruise ship in the world when it entered service.

The Voyager of the Seas has 15 decks and 1,557 passenger cabins, of which 757 are outside cabins with a balcony. There are 667 cabins with TV and refrigerator available for the crew. She is the first cruise ship to be equipped with a 120 meter long, nine meter wide and four deck high promenade , which has a wide range of bistros , bars, entertainment and shopping opportunities . It is the first cruise ship to be equipped with an ice skating arena (for around 900 spectators). It also has a five-deck theater for around 1350 spectators and a climbing wall .

The Voyager of the Seas was mainly used with cruises from Miami in the Caribbean. Other trips led to Mexico, Belize, Canada and New Jersey. There were also European trips to Spain, Italy, France, Slovenia and Croatia. Since 2012 trips have also been made to China, Japan and South Korea as well as to Australia, the South Seas and New Zealand.

Special occurrences

  • On February 19, 1999, a fire broke out in the Turku shipyard on deck 1 in the stern of the ship. It could be deleted within three and a half hours. Despite the damage that occurred in the crew area and in the hold, the agreed delivery date was met. According to the shipyard, around 100 tons of steel had to be replaced.
  • In May 2005, an infection with a human norovirus occurred during a Caribbean cruise . According to the CDC , a total of 45 passengers and 14 crew members fell ill from May 15-22, 2005, and a further 85 passengers and 14 crew members from May 22-29, 2005. This was less than 3% at any one time and therefore not an epidemic according to the CDC .
  • In July 2005 a cruise was diverted to Canada instead of Bermuda due to cyclone "Franklin".
