The Oasis of the Seas (dt. Oasis of the Seas ) is a cruise ship in the shipping company Royal Caribbean International . She is the lead ship of the Oasis class. In the list of the largest and most expensive cruise ships ever commissioned and built, the Oasis of the Seas, with a length of 360 meters and around 800 million euros (USD 900 million) in construction costs, is just behind her sister ship Allure, which was later completed of the Seas , which is considered to be slightly larger due to the tight construction tolerances.

history

Construction, transfer and commissioning

The Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. awarded the order to the Finnish shipyard Aker Yards (today: Meyer Turku OY ) to build the ship on February 4, 2006 . Initially referred to as Project Genesis , the name Oasis of the Seas was announced in May 2008. The motto of the shipping company for the construction was "We build the unbelievable".

The keel of the ship with hull number 1363 was laid on June 19, 2007 at the shipyard in Turku . On November 21, 2008 the building dock was flooded and the expansion continued. The test drives on the Baltic Sea began on June 8, 2009 and could be completed in the middle of the same month. The ship was handed over to the shipping company on October 28, 2009.

On the morning of October 30, 2009, the transfer to Port Everglades near Fort Lauderdale began . After sailing through the Baltic Sea, the Oasis of the Seas reached the Storebaelt Bridge on the evening of November 1, 2009, which has a clearance height of 65 meters. In order to pass the bridge, the exhaust pipes had to be retracted. In addition, the ship was brought to almost maximum speed, which creates a greater draft ( squat effect). There was about half a meter of space between the superstructure of the ship and the bridge.

In Solent shipyard workers were taken on board. Top speeds of 24  knots (about 44 km / h) were reached during the crossing of the Atlantic . One of the lifeboats was slightly damaged in stormy winds and high seas on the North Atlantic . Due to the weather two days later than planned, the Oasis of the Seas arrived at its home port on the morning of November 13, 2009.

The ship was christened on November 30, 2009 in Fort Lauderdale. In order to represent the seven thematic areas ("Neighborhoods") of the ship, seven godmothers were named:

commitment

Oasis of the Seas , registered in the shipping register of the Bahamas , operates year-round cruises to the Caribbean . On December 5, 2009, the ship made her maiden voyage from Fort Lauderdale and docked in Saint Thomas , Sint Maarten and the Bahamas during the week-long cruise . At the time of the maiden voyage, only these destinations were technically and logistically prepared for the arrival of a cruise ship of this size.

Machine system and drive

The Oasis of the Seas is equipped with a diesel-electric machine system that acts as a power plant and supplies the entire ship with electrical energy and process heat . It consists of six medium-speed four-stroke diesel engines of the Wärtsilä  46 type with common rail injection . With this technology, the pollutant emissions of the engines are greatly reduced. Exhaust gases are barely visible under all operating conditions. Three V-12-cylinder and three V-16-cylinder engines are grouped into two groups. The total output is more than 88 MW.

The electrical system was developed and built by ABB . It includes, among other things, the six main generators with the associated switching devices, three drive systems of the ACS6000 type with corresponding additional assemblies and the drives for the four bow thrusters . The emergency generators are powered by two MTU 16V4000 diesel engines.

Three ABB "Azipod" propeller gondolas built into the stern , which can be rotated 360 ° for steering and maneuvering, provide the propulsion of the ship. There is an electric motor in each nacelle, which transmits an output of 20 MW directly to a five-blade fixed propeller (so-called pull propeller , diameter: six meters) pointing forward in the direction of travel . The quadruple bow thruster was developed and built by Wärtsilä . The system works with controllable pitch propellers that run at constant speed and has an output of 22 MW. It is used for maneuvering in harbors and at low speeds and gives the Oasis of the Seas a high degree of maneuverability despite its size.

Cabins

Look inside

The Oasis of the Seas has a total of 2,704 cabins in 37 different categories, 46 of which are wheelchair accessible. Since the cabins are in two hotel blocks standing on the fuselage, an unusually large number of outside cabins with balconies (1,956 units) could be created. The offer ranges from the standard cabin to the 28 newly designed spacious lofts , which were realized for the first time on the Oasis of the Seas . The lofts are on the two upper decks. The two-story “Royal Loft Suite” is the largest loft on board with an area of 141 m². It is equipped with a grand piano , a library , a balcony with an LCD TV and a whirlpool . The “Royal Loft Suite” can be combined with the “Crown Loft Suite” to form a residential unit of 192 m². In addition to the lofts, the ship is also equipped with comfortable suites . The equipment of the "Royal Suite" is based on the "Royal Loft Suite" and is designed for four people. The “Presidential Family Suite” can accommodate up to 14 people. She has u. a. over four bedrooms and four bathrooms. The six “AquaTheater Suites” have a clear view of the “Boardwalk” and the “AquaTheater”. These suites are designed for eight people and are each equipped with two bedrooms and two bathrooms.

The subject areas ("Neighborhoods")

A special feature of the Oasis of the Seas are the so-called "neighborhoods", which are mainly located between the two cabin blocks. These are thematically structured areas, some of which are equipped with a large number of tropical plants.

Entertainment Place (Deck 4)

The Entertainment Place is modeled on a metropolitan nightlife district and offers extensive entertainment options in various bars , clubs , lounges and theater stages .

  • Opal Theater: main auditorium with around 1400 seats; extends over three decks
  • Comedy Live: Comedy stage

The “Vitality At Sea Spa” and the fitness center form the wellness area of the Oasis of the Seas .

Royal Promenade (Deck 5)

The “Royal Promenade” forms the entrance area and is the heart of the ship. Its size exceeds the promenades of the ships from the Voyager and Freedom class and at 19 meters is more than twice as wide as that of the Freedom class. There are nine restaurants and bars and eight shops here. In the evening entertainment is provided on an extendable stage three meters high.

Boardwalk (deck 6)

View of the boardwalk and the AquaTheater

The "Boardwalk" is modeled on the funfair-like piers along the English coast and nostalgic beach promenades. It ends at the stern of the ship with the "AquaTheater", an open amphitheater with 735 seats. a. is used for water acrobatics. The pool can be used by guests during the day. Diving courses are also held here. It is 5.4 m deep, making it the deepest pool that has ever been built on a cruise ship. The two climbing walls are in the immediate vicinity of the “AquaTheater”. The center of the “Boardwalk” is a carousel with hand-carved wooden figures. Of the 235 cabins in this section, the six “AquaTheater Suites” offer a direct view of the “AquaTheater”. The remaining cabins open onto the boardwalk (most of them have a balcony).

Central Park (Deck 8)

The "Central Park" is a kind of city park, which - open at the top - extends lengthways across the ship. There are seven outdoor restaurants on either side of the promenade. A novelty is the “Rising Tide Bar”, which moves slowly up and down between the “Royal Promenade” (Deck 5) and the “Central Park” (Deck 8). It offers space for 50 visitors. More than 300 cabins, most of them with balconies, flank “Central Park” on six decks. Large glass windows allow a view of the “Royal Promenade”.

Youth Zone

The “Youth Zone” offers various themed playgrounds in which children and young people are looked after by specially trained staff. Various partner companies were responsible for equipping the playgrounds.

The Pool and Sports Zone (Decks 15 and 16)

The "Pool and Sports Zone" extends over the entire length of the ship. In addition to the main pool, there is also a pool with a sandy beach on the pool deck. Families should be addressed with the "H 2 O zone". In the rear area, the sports deck, there is a 9-hole mini golf course and a basketball / volleyball field . With a cable car called "ZipLine" (Deck 16) you can float over 25 meters from the sports deck over the "Boardwalk". Two “FlowRider” ( simulators for surfing ), also known from other ships of the shipping company, are housed on the sun deck . The front part of the “Pool and Sports Zone” (“Solarium”) is reserved for adults and extends over both decks. The part is extensively glazed and open at the top. The “solarium” also includes six whirlpools, four of which protrude over the edge of the ship at a height of 45 m above sea level.

Lifeboats

Oasis of the Seas lifeboat

The Oasis of the Seas carries 18 double-hulled lifeboats (also referred to by the shipping company as a "rescue ship" because of their size) of the type Schat-Harding CRV55. The catamaran boats are completely closed and are powered by two diesel engines with an output of 52 kW (approx. 70 hp) each. They hang freely above the water and can be set down vertically without having to be swiveled out. Each boat is 16.7 m long and 6.6 m wide and is designed for 370 people (354 passengers, 16 crew members). The boats are equipped with GPS, stowage facilities for stretchers and, for the first time, a toilet. In an emergency, they should be able to be climbed within twelve minutes. There are also inflatable life rafts.

The life jackets are no longer stored in the cabins on board, but are kept at the assembly points for passengers and crew.

facts and figures

  • The Oasis of the Seas is due to construction tolerances almost 5 cm smaller than its sister ship, the Allure of the Seas , and thus was in front of the Harmony of the Seas as the second largest cruise ship in the world. Accordingly, since 2016 she has only been the third largest cruise ship.
  • Around 241 km of pipelines and around 5,310 km of electrical lines were laid on the Oasis of the Seas .
  • Around 600,000 liters of paint were required for the painting.
  • The 21 pools hold around 2,300 m³ of water.
  • Around 2,100 m³ of fresh water are required every day.
  • In “Central Park” there are 12,175 plants, some of the trees are over seven meters high.
  • The Oasis of the Seas has the longest jogging track at sea. One lap is 692 meters.
