The Allure of the Seas ( English for "lure of the seas") is the second ship of the Oasis class. With 225,282  GT , she was the largest cruise ship in the world when it was delivered in 2010 . The Allure of the Seas can accommodate around 6300 passengers and 2100 crew members. She works for the American shipping company Royal Caribbean International and was registered under the flag of the Bahamas with the home port Nassau .

history

Construction, transfer and commissioning

On March 31, 2007, the American Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. and the Finnish shipyard Aker Yards (from autumn 2008: STX Europe Cruise, from autumn 2014: Meyer Turku ) received the order to build the second ship in the Oasis class.

The keel of the ship with hull number 1364 was laid on March 12, 2008 at the shipyard in Turku . Compared to the type ship, however, the Allure of the Seas has had various design changes. Among other things, the lifeboats were moved further back on the hull in order to avoid damage from the impact of waves in heavy seas. For this reason, when had Oasis of the Seas still deflector must be retrofitted.

The building dock was flooded on November 20, 2009. At this point the ship was about 60 percent complete.

After completion, the test drives on the Baltic Sea were carried out in mid-September 2010 . Exactly one year to the day after the handover of the Oasis of the Seas , the Allure of the Seas was also delivered to the shipping company on October 28, 2010, two weeks earlier than originally planned. Due to a lack of follow-up orders, the shipyard initially had to be closed for a few months.

At Sint Maarten

After the Allure of the Seas had left the shipyard on October 29, 2010, she passed the Storebaelt Bridge on the evening of October 30, 2010 . Despite retracted exhaust pipes and a speed of 24  knots (approx. 44 km / h) in order to take advantage of the squat effect (also known as "sinking"), only about 30 cm of space remained between the ship and the bridge. After crossing the North Atlantic , the ship reached its base port of Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale on November 12, 2010 .

The Allure of the Seas was christened on November 29, 2010 as part of a charity cruise. The cabins for this trip had been sold to sponsors and donors. As part of the collaboration with the DreamWorks film studio , the character “Princess Fiona” from the animated film “ Shrek - The daredevil hero ” was chosen as godmother . The christening ceremony took place in front of around 3500 spectators in the ship's Amber Theater.

commitment

The Allure of the Seas' first cruise at the beginning of December 2010 led to the shipping company's own Labadee peninsula in northern Haiti . Of the five days, the ship spent two days at sea. The ship was then used for one-week cruises both in the western (including Cozumel and Costa Maya, Mexico) and in the eastern Caribbean ( Nassau / Bahamas , Charlotte Amalie / Saint Thomas , and Philipsburg / Sint Maarten ).

Incidents

On April 20, 2012, a fire broke out in the engine room , which was extinguished using the sprinkler system. No injuries were reported. The Allure of the Seas was able to continue its voyage to Fort Lauderdale .

On December 9, 2013, the Allure of the Seas lost a lifeboat near Nassau after a steel cable broke.

Sister ships

The Allure of the Seas is the second ship in the Oasis class. Four ships of the class were put into service by 2018. A fifth ship is to follow in 2021.
