Special occurrences
A norovirus broke out on a cruise (November 26th - December 3rd, 2006) . 338 passengers and 46 crew members fell ill with the virus, which leads to nausea, diarrhea and vomiting. According to the shipping company, a single passenger brought the virus on board. Until the return of the Freedom of the Seas , not only were the patients treated, but door handles, balcony railings, etc. were also regularly disinfected to prevent the disease from spreading further. On the following cruise (December 3rd - 10th, 2006), 97 passengers were again ill, contrary to expectations. For this reason, the ship was intensively cleaned and disinfected for two days in the port of Miami.
On October 9, 2011, the Freedom of the Seas got caught in a storm. The ship rocked to such an extent that objects fell off the shelves and public areas and cabins were damaged. The shipping company reported injuries to people, which should not have been serious. The cruises could continue, a dock stay was not necessary for the repairs.
On July 22, 2015, shortly after docking in Falmouth, Jamaica, a fire broke out in the engine room. As a precaution, the passengers were ordered to various assembly points. However, the automatic fire extinguishing systems quickly brought the fire under control. A crew member is said to have been injured.
