The Independence of the Seas is a cruise ship operated by Royal Caribbean International . It is the third ship of the Freedom class, the sister ships are the Freedom of the Seas and the Liberty of the Seas .

history

Independence of the Seas in Oslo

The ship was built in Aker Yards in Turku , Finland under construction number NB 1354. The ship was ordered on April 2, 2005 and delivered on April 17, 2008. The christening took place on April 30, 2008 in Southampton, the godmother was Elizabeth Hill . The ship is operated by RCL Cruises under the flag of the Bahamas . From its base port in Southampton , since May 2008 it has mainly been calling at destination ports in the Mediterranean .

The ship is around 340 m long and, measured over everything, around 56 m wide. 15 of the 18 decks are intended for passengers. The ship can accommodate 3,634 passengers and a crew of 1,360.

Incidents

In an oil tank explosion on May 31, 2011 in the port of Gibraltar , parts of the ship lying in the immediate vicinity of the tank were slightly damaged. Twelve passengers on the ship suffered minor burns.

Shipyard stay

On April 20, 2013, the Independence of the Seas came to Blohm and Voss in Hamburg in dry dock for regular maintenance work . She stayed there until April 30, 2013.
