The Brilliance of the Seas is a Royal Caribbean International cruise ship . She has three sister ships: the Radiance of the Seas , Serenade of the Seas and the Jewel of the Seas .

history

The keel-laying of the Brilliance of the Seas took place on June 25, 1998 on the Jos. L. Meyer GmbH shipyard in Papenburg , Germany . On December 1, 2001, the roofed construction dock was flooded, the ship floated for the first time. The undocking takes place a few months later on May 31, 2002, shortly afterwards the last work on the equipment pier began. The ship cost $ 350 million to build.

On June 11th and 12th, 2002, the Ems transfer was carried out from the shipyard in Papenburg to Eemshaven . Afterwards some test drives took place in the North Sea , during which u. a. the maximum speed was determined. The handover to Royal Caribbean International took place on July 5, 2002 in Eemshaven. The ship sailed under the flag of the Bahamas with home port Nassau . The ship was christened on August 22, 2003 in New York . Godmother was Whoopi Goldberg . From there the first trip started via Amsterdam to Harwich , England .

Marilyn Ofer, chairman of the Holocaust Educational Trust , was godmother at the ship's christening, which took place on July 12, 2002. On July 15, 2002, the seven-day maiden voyage started from Harwich through the Norwegian fjords. This was followed by a series of four different cruises from Harwich around the British Isles, to the Norwegian fjords, to Scandinavia and Russia .

From April 27 to May 15, 2008, the Brilliance of the Seas gas turbine was subjected to extensive maintenance at Blohm + Voss in Hamburg . For this purpose, it was towed into Dock Elbe 17 - like her sister ship, the Jewel of the Seas , in 2007 .

Areas of application

The ship was initially deployed in Northern Europe in 2002, then in the Mediterranean and the Caribbean between 2003 and 2011 . In 2010 it was first used for cruises in the Persian Gulf from Dubai in the winter season . Its current areas of application are the Baltic Sea , Norway and Iceland in summer, Canada and New England in autumn and the Caribbean in winter.

Azipod propeller pod

Two new types of propeller pods from ABB that can be rotated through 360 ° are used on the Brilliance of the Seas . Each of these gondolas has an electric motor with an output of 19.5 MW each. There are also three bow thrusters in the bow of the ship. These give the ship a high degree of maneuverability during docking and casting off maneuvers. Electricity is powered by two General Electric - gas turbines of type LM2500 (20.000 kW), which are based on the CF6-6, as well as a Fincantieri - steam turbine produced (16,323 kW).

In-flight entertainment

Typical on-board entertainment on the ships of Royal Caribbean International includes climbing walls, a jogging course, a basketball and volleyball court, golf simulators, a 9-hole mini golf course and a large number of fitness equipment. There are also a number of self-balancing pool tables on board.

Incidents

In July 2005, George Allen Smith disappeared without a trace during his honeymoon on the Brilliance of the Seas . Blood was later found on part of the ship below the balcony cabins. After a search, it was found that George Allen Smith appeared to have fallen overboard. Later, the relatives received a severance payment of around one million US dollars.

On October 15, 2009, heavy gusts of wind in the Mediterranean destroyed several large windows of the ship and caused great devastation in 26 departments. As a result, the subsequent cruise from Barcelona could only start late.

On December 12, 2010, the Brilliance of the Seas got into heavy seas on the voyage to Alexandria off the coast of Egypt . Large parts of the interior were damaged, so three larger public areas had to be closed for the remainder of the cruise. In some cases, the electricity also failed - but this did not affect any essential control or navigation systems on the ship.
