The Quantum of the Seas is a cruise ship operated by Royal Caribbean International . She is the lead ship of the Quantum class .

history

The ship was commissioned from Meyer Werft in February 2011 , at that time under the project name Project Sunshine . On January 31, 2013, the steel cut for the ship began. On the same day the name of the ship was announced. The keel of the ship was laid on August 2, 2013, and construction of the sister ship Anthem of the Seas began on the same day .

On June 5, 2014, a fire broke out in a cabin on deck 3. Two workers were injured and there was property damage of around 50,000 euros. The fire did not cause any delays in construction. On August 13, 2014, the Quantum of the Seas was undocked before setting out for the Ems overpass on the afternoon of September 22 . After the Ems overpass, the test drives that took place in the Skagerrak were carried out . Equipment work was then carried out in Bremerhaven, including the installation of the North Star. Further sea tests were then carried out. After its completion, the ship was docked on October 23, 2014 at Blohm + Voss in Hamburg in the Elbe 17 dry dock as the largest ship to date, where the final work was carried out until October 25, 2014. The handover to the shipping company took place on October 28, 2014 in Bremerhaven. On November 14, 2014, the ship was christened in Cape Liberty by Kristin Chenoweth .

The Quantum of the Seas was the moment of delivery, the third largest cruise ship in the world and the largest ever built in Germany cruise ship. It is about 21,000 GT larger than the Norwegian Breakaway and 37,000 GT larger than the Disney Dream . With construction costs of around 970 million US dollars, the Quantum of the Seas was the most expensive cruise ship built at the time of delivery.

Lawsuit against the Emsüberweisung

The environmental associations WWF, BUND and Nabu sued against the Ems overpass of the Quantum of the Seas , as special regulations were issued for this and environmental requirements were temporarily suspended. The primary concern was that the damming would increase the salt content and the silt and the oxygen content would decrease. On June 30, 2014, the Oldenburg Administrative Court confirmed the legality of the invalidation of the environmental requirements. The court justified the judgment by stating that the Ems impoundment was a time-limited action that did not have any serious effects on the ecosystem.

technology

The Quantum of the Seas is the first cruise ship to have an air lubrication system . Air bubbles are ejected from the ship's hull. This reduces the friction between the water surface and the ship's hull and thus lowers fuel consumption by around 4 to 7 percent.

Freetime activities

The Quantum of the Seas with crane and swiveling glass gondola

The Quantum of the Seas has the North Star, a glass ball that hangs on a swivel arm, in which you can let your gaze wander from a height of up to 90 meters. It is also possible to do a parachute jump with the RipCord simulator from iFly. Furthermore, passengers can drive bumper cars in a multifunctional hall . The Quantum of the Seas also has a climbing wall , a surf simulator and the Dreamworks adventure world on board.

eat

There is no longer a classic main restaurant on board. The guest has the option of choosing from five restaurants. This new dining concept is called Dynamic Dining . There are no fixed meal times, no assigned seats. The ship has a total of 18 different dining options. A visit to some of these restaurants is included in the tour price:

  • American Icon Grill: American food (breakfast, lunch and dinner)
  • Silk: Chinese, Japanese, Thai, Vietnamese, and Indian cuisines (dinner only)
  • Chic: Modern cuisine (dinner only)
  • Grande: Popular Classic Dishes from Europe (Dinner Only)
  • Coastal Kitchen: Californian Mediterranean cuisine (breakfast, lunch and dinner); this restaurant is only available for suite guests.

Other food concepts can also be used for an additional fee:

  • Jamie's Italian by Jamie Oliver (lunch and dinner)
  • Michael's Genuine Pub: À la carte restaurant serving high quality drinks, beer and Michael Schwartz food (lunch and dinner)
  • Wonderland: Imaginative cuisine (dinner only)

Awards

The Quantum of the Seas is “Ship of the Year” of the German Cruise Award 2016. The editor-in-chief of the guide “Cruise Dreams”, Oliver P. Müller, cites the gastronomic offer beyond fixed table times and two particularly variable areas as the reasons for the award. the entertainment lounge TWO70 ° and the SeaPlex sports complex.
