March 2016 - Final equipment of the Ovation of the Seas in Bremerhaven at the Columbuskaje

The shipping company Royal Caribbean International ordered the Ovation of the Seas as the third unit in the Quantum class from Meyer Werft . Construction began on September 18, 2014 with the cutting of the first steel plate. The ship was laid down on March 5, 2015. As part of Meyer Werft's construction strategy , a 120 meter long section was undocked on June 20, 2015. A second section was undocked on August 14, 2015 to allow the Norwegian Escape to undock . Then both sections were re-docked for completion.

The Ovation of the Seas was undocked on February 18, 2016. On March 11th, the Ems overpass to Eemshaven began . From March 18 to 22, 2016, the Ovation of the Seas was docked in the Elbe 17 dry dock of the Hamburg shipyard Blohm + Voss for the final docking . From April 4, 2016 to April 7, 2016, the Ovation of the Seas was again in dry dock Elbe 17, during which the drive propellers were replaced. On April 8, 2016, the Ovation of the Seas was delivered. On June 24, 2016, the Ovation of the Seas was christened in Tianjin by Fan Bingbing .

Furnishing

The Ovation of the Seas has a swiveling observation gondola, a bumper car , a parachute jump simulator and a surf simulator .

technology

The Ovation of the Seas has as its two sister ships via Air Lubrication . Air bubbles are ejected from the bottom of the ship and affect the flow around the hull. The aim is to reduce the flow resistance and, consequently, to reduce fuel consumption.

Special occurrences

Volcanic eruption kills passengers on shore excursion (2019)

During a cruise from Sydney around New Zealand back to Sydney, the Ovation of the Seas docked in the port of Tauranga after stops in the Bay of Islands and in Auckland on December 9, 2019 at around 6:30 a.m. local time . When the volcano erupted on White Island shortly after 2 p.m., 38 passengers and crew members were on the island as part of an excursion to visit the volcano. Since not all island visitors could be rescued or salvaged by the scheduled departure of the ship at 6:00 p.m., the ship remained in port. On December 11th at 7:18 a.m. local time, the ship left the port with 27 fewer people on board, set course for Wellington and arrived there one day late. The planned circumnavigation of the South Island of New Zealand and the trip through the Fiordland National Park were not carried out because the ship had to be back in Sydney on December 16.
