The AIDAprima is a cruise ship owned by the British - American Carnival Corporation & plc . The ship was the first ship of the Hyperion class from Mitsubishi Heavy Industries -Werft in Japanese Nagasaki constructed. The ship, which is used by the AIDA Cruises group brand, which is specially geared towards the German market , starts cruises from Germany in summer and is used for cruises in the Orient in winter.

Like all other AIDA ships, it sails under the Italian flag . Costa Crociere in Genoa is responsible for the cruise operations .

history

Procurement and construction

On August 3, 2011, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries announced the agreement with Carnival Corporation & plc to build two cruise ships at MHI Nagasaki Shipyard & Engine Works . The total price was given as 140,000 euros per lower bed; this corresponds to a real price of around 455 million euros per ship. The AIDAprima is the first ship in the Hyperion class and should be delivered in March 2015.

Delays in construction

At the end of March 2014, AIDA Cruises announced that the AIDAprima was not expected to be delivered until October 1, 2015. As a result, the transfer of the ship from Yokohama to Hamburg, marketed as an 86-day trip around the world, had to be canceled according to the original plan.

The floating of the AIDAprima took place on May 3, 2014. For further expansion and the final equipment, she was hauled with tugs to the Kojagi Dock on the outskirts of Nagasaki.

On July 22, 2015, the ship was pulled out of the equipment dock and relocated to the harbor basin for final equipment and testing. A first planned test drive at the end of July had to be canceled at short notice for unknown reasons.

At the beginning of August 2015, AIDA Cruises confirmed that the delivery of the AIDAprima was again delayed. Plans to market the transfer trip in two stages and to use the ship in the Persian Gulf from October 2015 onwards have now been finally discarded. At the beginning of September 2015, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries announced that the ship would be handed over in December 2015, but this deadline could not be met, and delivery was postponed to April 2016.

On January 11, 2016, a fire broke out on deck 7 of the AIDAprima . The Nagasaki Fire Department has started an investigation to determine the cause of the fire . On January 31, a fire broke out on board the AIDAprima for the third time within a month .

Handover and baptism

On March 14, 2016, the AIDAprima left the shipyard in Nagasaki for Hamburg, after being handed over to AIDA Cruises . On April 21, 2016, she moored in the port of Hamburg for the first time.

The christening took place on May 7, 2016 as part of the 827th  port birthday in Hamburg. Emma Schweiger was the godmother .

Hotel equipment

The hotel operations for guests extend from deck 3 to deck 18, with deck 13 being left out. Cabins are located on decks 4,5 and 8-16. Many of the cabins have their own balconies, which are on all four sides of the ship. Guests in the panorama cabins on deck 16 have an exclusive outdoor area (patio). In addition to the water playground on deck 14, there is a largely internal main swimming pool on deck 15. There are also smaller pools and pools on deck 17, 16, 15 (2 pieces, one inside) and 8 (9 pieces, 5 of which in the spa area). Two large water slides start on deck 18. Sports equipment is available in a fitness center. The outdoor sports deck is used as an ice rink in winter. There is a mini golf course and a climbing garden all year round .

There are five buffet , three specialty and three - completely surcharge - à la carte restaurants and a cooking studio available for catering ; also three snack bars and two cafes as well as twelve bars. For entertainment, there is a disco and a night club in addition to the main theater and the large screen . In addition, child care is offered for three age groups from 6 months and numerous shopping opportunities.

Routes

The AIDAprima initially did a 7-day tour in Western Europe all year round. After leaving Hamburg , there was a day at sea, followed by four days in port in Southampton , Le Havre , Zeebrugge and Rotterdam . The AIDAprima left the Dutch metropolis at 8:00 a.m. on the following day and reached the Hamburg exchange port 24 hours later. In November 2017 the AIDAprima switched from the metropolitan route to the Canary Islands.

In the winter of 2017/18 she drove the 7-day Canary Islands route, which included the Canary Islands Gran Canaria , Tenerife , Fuerteventura , Lanzarote and the Portuguese island of Madeira . In April 2018, the AIDAprima will move to the Mediterranean Sea for a 7-day trip with stops in Barcelona , Livorno , Civitavecchia and Corsica and Mallorca . In the 2018/19 winter season, the AIDAprima will be used in the Orient to set off on cruises from Dubai and Abu Dhabi . The ship then changes to Kiel , from where it alternates between cruises to the Baltic Sea and Norway.

Incidents

On a Mediterranean cruise at the end of September 2018, there was an increased occurrence of the norovirus among passengers, over 300 are said to have been affected by gastrointestinal complaints. The guests had to leave the ship earlier than planned after arriving in Barcelona so that it could be disinfected.

technology

The engines of the AIDAprima are designed for operation with both heavy fuel oil and marine diesel oil . Heavy oil is harmful to the environment and health due to its high sulfur content and the release of fine dust . In order to reduce the load, a filter system was installed, which, however, was not yet approved when it was put into service and therefore cannot yet be used. According to AIDA, approval as of May 2016 is not yet foreseeable. Until further notice, the ship will operate on the lower-polluting marine diesel oil, also due to the applicable regulations for its area of operation.

In order to reduce pollutant emissions in the port, one of the engines can be operated with liquefied natural gas (LNG) while the port is berthed (“dual fuel system”). The NO x emissions are reduced by 80% and the CO 2 emissions are reduced by 20% compared to conventional marine diesel. Because of the increased risk of explosion during handling, each port must approve LNG operation. Approval for the Port of Hamburg was granted in 2016.

In September 2018, after the manufacturer was recalled , the AIDAprima had to go to a shipyard for an unscheduled technical inspection of the Azipods . The shipping company canceled the Mediterranean cruise planned at this time.
