The AIDAluna is a cruise ship operated by Carnival Corporation & plc . It is used for trips under the AIDA Cruises group brand , which is specially geared towards the German market . It is operated under the Italian flag by Costa Crociere in Genoa .

In spring 2009, the ship was commissioned as the third type of the Sphinx class, alongside the newbuildings AIDAbella and AIDAdiva , which had been in service one or two years earlier .

history

After AIDA Cruises had already announced on 15 January 2008 in a press release the name of the new building, which was Aida Luna (Project name AIDA SPHINX II ) on 29 March 2008 at the Meyer shipyard in Papenburg as yard number S. 660 laid Kiel . Only two days earlier, the Ems overpass of its predecessor AIDAbella (project name AIDA SPHINX III ) had been successfully completed. As part of the keel laying, 100 representatives from travel agencies as well as employees from Meyer Werft and AIDA Cruises placed coins under the first of 55 building blocks. On October 10, 2008, about a third of the ship was towed out of the dock hall in order to install the last construction segment with the chimney. Almost four months later, on February 13, 2009, the AIDAluna was undocked and, after further technical tests, moved to the equipment quay. The transfer through the Ems began on February 21, 2009 and was completed with the mooring at Emskai in Emden on the morning of February 22, 2009. On March 16, 2009, Meyer Werft was able to hand over the ship to AIDA Cruises in a festive ceremony.

The AIDAluna was then transferred to Hamburg and left for her 14-day maiden voyage from Hamburg to Palma on March 22, 2009 , where she was christened on April 4, 2009 by the German model Franziska Knuppe . The day after the christening, the AIDAluna set off on her first regular trans-European trip . The route led back to Hamburg via Barcelona , Valencia , Tangier , Cádiz , Lisbon , A Coruña , Santander , Le Havre . On April 22nd, 2009 she docked for the first time in Kiel , from where the ship made cruises on the Baltic Sea in its first summer season .

On October 19, 2009, the AIDAluna was named “Ship of the Year 2010” by the editors of Schlummer-Atlas .

Ship technology

From a technical point of view, the AIDAluna largely corresponds to its sister ships from the first generation of the Sphinx class . It has a diesel-electric machine system in which four generators powered by diesel engines supply the ship with electricity and process heat . The two propellers are driven by electric motors .

As part of extensive maintenance work carried out at the Blohm + Voss shipyard in Hamburg in spring 2014 , the AIDAluna was the first ship in the Sphinx class to be equipped with an exhaust gas cleaning system that reduces sulfur oxide emissions by around 90 percent. The scrubber is part of a three-stage system that was developed within the Carnival Group .
