With around 190,000 inhabitants (2008), La Romana is the fourth largest city in the Dominican Republic . It is the capital of the province of La Romana and is located on the south coast, opposite the island of Catalina . La Romana is on a small slope and there is a large industrial part, u. a. with a sugar refinery of the Central Romana Corporation .

The mouth of the Rio Dulce was expanded into a small cruise terminal, from which the German cruise companies AIDA Cruises and TUI Cruises regularly leave for cruises to the Caribbean. La Romana International Airport is around 8 km away , and the international airports of Punta Cana and Santo Domingo are around 70 km away (east and west) .

Close to the city is the private estate of Casa de Campo, where many celebrities own a villa. This settlement also includes the artists' village Altos de Chavón , where Michael Jackson and Lisa Marie Presley got married.
