Pedro Nolasco

Pedro Nolasco (born February 2, 1962 in La Romana , † September 15, 1995 in La Romana) was a Dominican boxer . Nolasco was a silver medalist in the 1979 and 1983 Pan American Games and a bronze medalist in the 1984 Olympic Games .

Career

amateur

1978 Nolasco took part in the flyweight (-51 kg) in the Central America and Caribbean Games and took third place. The following year he started at the Pan American Games in San Juan , where he reached the final against local hero Alberto Mercado, which he lost. In 1981 Nolasco won the featherweight (-57 kg) the Central American and Caribbean Games in Santo Domingo , but was eliminated at the World Championships the following year in the first fight against the later bronze medalist Bernard Gray, USA (4: 1). Nolasco now switched to bantamweight (-54 kg) and finished second at the 1983 Pan American Games . In the same year he also won silver medals at the North American Championships and the Central American and Caribbean Games. In 1984 Nolasco took part in the Olympic Games in Los Angeles and after victories over Ljubiša Simić , Yugoslavia (4: 1), reached the reigning African champion John Siryakibbe, Uganda (5: 0), the junior world champion of 1983 Juan Molina, Puerto Rico (3 : 2), and the winner of the 1982 Asian Games Sung Kil Moon, South Korea (RSC 1st), the semifinals. There he faced the future Olympic champion Maurizio Stecca , Italy , to whom he lost 5-0 judges' votes, which meant he went out of the tournament by winning the bronze medal. This was the first Olympic medal from an athlete from the Dominican Republic.

In 1986 Nolasco turned professional but had little success. In his 9th fight in 1987 he was defeated by the former WBA world champion Victor Callejas. He fought his last fight in 1989 against his Olympic opponent Stecca for the world title of the WBO . Nolasco lost to Stecca prematurely after six rounds. Nolasco's professional dance shows 5 wins (1 knockout) in 11 fights.
