amateur

Stecca won the Italian bantamweight championship (-54 kg) three times in a row from 1979 to 1981 . In 1982 he became Junior European Champion in Schwerin and won the military world championships in Algiers . In 1983 he won the World Cup in Rome , but was eliminated at the European Championships in Sofia in the quarter-finals against Klaus-Dieter Kirchstein from the GDR .

At the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles , Stecca won after victories over Philippe Sutcliffe, Ireland (5: 0), Star Zulu, Zambia (5: 0), Robinson Pitalua, Colombia (5: 0), in the semifinals over Pedro Nolasco , Dominican Republic (5: 0), and in the final over Héctor López , Mexico (4: 1), the gold medal in the bantamweight class.

professional

Stecca turned pro in 1984 and after 35 victories in 35 fights, she won the then little-regarded WBO featherweight title in 1989 . He lost his second title defense prematurely against the US IBF world champion Louie Espinosa. In 1991 he won the vacant title back, defended it against two lower-class opponents and lost it in May 1992 to Colin McMillan from Britain.

His last four title fights all took place in France for the European Championship. He beat Fabrice Benichou on points in 1992, lost to Hervé Jacob by technical knockout in 1993, won the rematch early and then lost to Stephane Haccoune. After a year and a half break, Stecca won the Italian championship title in 1995 and ended his career shortly thereafter.
