Career

Career as an amateur boxer

Vittorio Tagagnini started boxing as a teenager in 1924. The athlete fighting in the normal display (left display) first attracted attention in 1927, when he was 17 years old when he defeated the then Italian top boxer in the bantamweight division Caddeo II in Cagliari. In 1928 he became the Italian bantamweight champion in Milan. He was then sent to the Olympic Games in Amsterdam . There he defeated Fidel Ortíz from Mexico, Jack Garland from Great Britain, Frank Traynor from Ireland and John Daley from the United States in the bantamweight division and became Olympic champion. This Olympic boxing tournament was the only international boxing tournament he played in his short amateur career.

Career as a professional boxer

On June 3, 1929 Vittorio Tamagnini played his first professional fight in Bologna. He defeated it in the featherweight Pablo Blanco by Techn. KO in the 2nd round. A very successful career as a feather or light weight followed, in which he also received several championship honors. On November 12, 1930 he was in Bologna Italian featherweight champion with a point victory over Luigi Quadrini. On June 10, 1931, he got the first chance to become European featherweight champion in Barcelona. He lost this championship fight but against the Spaniard Jose Girones on points.

On June 10, 1932 he achieved a sensational victory in Milan when he beat reigning NBA bantamweight world champion Panama Al Brown in a non-title fight over 10 rounds on points. On March 23, 1933, he achieved a similarly remarkable success in Paris. He defeated ex-flyweight world champion Young Perez from France on points. These victories made a great impression on the boxing world of that time. Even so, his management failed to get a world championship fight for Vittorio Tamagnini. In the revenge, which took place in Tunis on July 28, 1933, Young Perez then triumphed over Vittorio Tamagnini just on points. On January 13, 1934, Vittorio Tamagnini defended his Italian featherweight championship title in Rome with a points win after 12 rounds over Otello Abbruciati. On March 26, 1935 he did not succeed in Paris again to become European featherweight champion because he lost against the French Maurice Holtzer after 15 rounds on points.

On October 10, 1936 he was able to become European champion of professional boxers in the lightweight for the first time in Rome with a technical knockout victory in the 7th round over the Belgian Raymond Renard. He successfully defended this title on December 8, 1936 in Paris with a points victory over the French Gustave Humery and on January 22, 1937 in Berlin with a point victory over Rudi Kretzschmar, Germany. On April 22, 1937, he lost the European lightweight title in Paris by a technical knockout defeat in the 11th round to Maurice Arnault from France. He was down twice in that fight.

In 1938 and 1939 Vittorio Tamagnini boxed three more times for the Italian championship title in lightweight, but could not win any of these fights.

On December 21, 1939, he ended his career as a professional boxer in Milan with a technical knockout victory in the 6th round over Rene Gabes. After the end of World War II, in which his hometown Civitavecchia suffered severe war damage, he fought another fight in Civitavecchia on September 23, 1945, in which he defeated his compatriot Guerrino Cosmi on points. With this struggle he wanted to set an example for the reconstruction of the city of Civitavecchia.

In total, he played 66 fights as a professional boxer, of which he won 49. He lost 10 fights and drew six times.
