Gu Yong-ju

Gu Yong-ju (born July 17, 1955 ) is a former boxer from North Korea and 1976 Olympic bantamweight champion .

The 1.72 m tall Gu Yong-ju won the flyweight gold medal at the 7th Asian Games in Tehran in 1974 . In 1976 he started in bantamweight at the 21st Summer Olympics in Montreal , where he won 4-1 in the preliminary round, Ibrahim Faredin from Romania 4-1, in the round of 16 the European runner-up Chacho Andreykowski from Bulgaria 5-0, in the quarterfinals Weerachart Saturngrun from Thailand 5-0 , defeated Patrick Cowdell from Great Britain 4-1 in the semifinals and Charles Mooney from the USA 5-0 in the final and won the gold medal in the bantamweight division.

In 1977 he won another gold medal in featherweight at the International Police Championships in Ulaanbaatar , as well as the bronze medal at the Asian Championships of the same year in Jakarta .

At the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow he started in the featherweight division and was already defeated in his first fight against the later bronze medalist Krzysztof Kosedowski from Poland.
