Valerian Sergejewitsch Sokolow ( Russian Валериан Сергеевич Соколов; born August 30, 1946 in Schichabylowo, Urmarskij Rajon, Chuvash ASSR , Russian SFSR ) is a former Russian- Soviet boxer .

Career

On October 26, 1968 Sokolow won after victories over Rafael Anchundia, Ecuador (3: 2), Mickey Carter, Great Britain (KO 2nd), Samuel Mbugua , Kenya (5: 0), Eiji Morioka , Japan (5: 0), and Eridadi Mukwanga , Uganda (TKO 2nd), the bantamweight (-54 kg) gold medal at the Olympic Games in Mexico City .

In 1968, 1969, 1971 and 1973 Sokolow was the Soviet champion in various weight classes.

From 2009 to 2011 he was one of Russia's national coaches.

Awards and honors

Sokolow was awarded the Order of Honor and Order "For Service to the Fatherland in the Armed Forces of the USSR" 3rd class.

A street in the town of Tscheboxary was named after him.
