Escape attempt and successful escape

In July 2007 Rigondeaux took part for Cuba in the Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro and sat with his teammate Erislandy Lara from the Cuban team. His upcoming quarter-final fight was automatically counted as a defeat due to his non-appearance. Since his last defeat in 2003, he had achieved 104 victories in a row, in total he achieved a total of 378 victories with twelve defeats in his amateur career. Ringondeaux and Lara were then signed by the Hamburg boxing stable Arena Box-Promotion , which a few months earlier had already been able to sign their compatriots Odlanier Solís , Yuriorkis Gamboa and Yan Barthelemí . Since their Brazilian visas had expired at the end of the Pan American Games , they were arrested by the Brazilian federal police for illegal residence. Contrary to expectations, the two boxers did not apply for asylum, but returned to Cuba, where they were banned from working for life. In February 2009 Rigondeaux made a second, this time successful, escape attempt and reached the American stronghold of Cuban exiles, Miami .

Professional career

In the USA, Guillermo Rigondeaux was signed by the purely Cuban boxing stable "Caribe Promotions". He lives in Los Angeles, where he trains in the "Wild Card Boxing Club" of the experienced trainer Freddie Roach.

On May 22, 2009 Rigondeaux won his first professional fight against Juan Noriega (USA) in Miami. In his seventh professional fight he defeated in the fight for the interim world championship of the WBA in the super bantamweight on November 13, 2010 Ricardo Córdoba from Panama on points. He then defended the interim title in March 2011 with a technical knockout in the first round against the previously undefeated Irish Willie Casey. On January 20, 2012 Rigondeaux boxed against the WBA title holder Rico Ramos for the full world championship and won by knockout in the sixth round due to a left liver hook. He defended his title twice in the same year against rather mediocre opponents. A union fight with the WBO world champion Nonito Donaire was agreed for April 13, 2013 . Rigondeaux won this fight unanimously on points despite a knockdown in the tenth round.

In December 2013, he beat Joseph Agbeko on points. In July 2014 he defeated Sod Kokietgym (record: 63-2) by knockout in the first round.
