Adolfo Horta

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Adolfo Horta Martínez (born March 10, 1957 in San Lorenzo near Santiago de Cuba , † November 28, 2016 in Camagüey ) was a Cuban boxer . He was world champion of amateurs in 1978, 1982 and 1986 and winner of the silver medal at the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow in the featherweight division.

Career

Adolfo Horta grew up in Camagüey and started boxing there in 1969 at the age of 12. He quickly developed into a top boxer and was in 1971 in the weight class up to 40 kg body weight and 1973 in the weight class up to 51 kg Cuban youth champion and took 3rd place in 1972 in the weight class up to 46 kg body weight.

In 1974 he started for the first time at the Cuban Senior Championships and finished 3rd in the flyweight division after a loss in the semifinals against Ramón Duvalón . In 1976 he became Cuban champion for the first time. He won the bantamweight title with a points win over José Aguilar. By the end of his career in 1986, he won this title ten times in the bantam feather and lightweight. He defeated world-class people like Ángel Herrera , Jesús Sollet , Ito Torriente and Ramón Gregoire .

From 1976 Adolfo Horta also started regularly at the large international boxing tournament Giraldo Córdova Cardín . When he first participated in Pinar del Río , he lost the final bantamweight fight against his compatriot Orlando Martínez. But from 1977 until 1986 he won this tournament a total of nine times and whenever he participated.

Also at many international championships the winner was Adolfo Horta. It all started in 1976, when he won the Central American and Caribbean Bantamweight Championships for the first time in Kingston (Jamaica) with a final victory over Raul Gonzalez from Venezuela . He won this title in 1977 in Panama City with a victory in the final bantamweight fight over Nelson Trujillo from Puerto Rico . In 1978 Adolfo Horta started at the 2nd World Cup of Amateurs in Belgrade in the bantamweight division. It defeated Todor Dinu from Romania on points, won over Raji Lateef from Nigeria by breaking off in the first round and then defeated Barnabas Montanez from Puerto Rico and Stefan Förster from the GDR with 5-0 judge votes each. In the final battle against the Yugoslav Fazlija Šaćirović he had to fight hard to win Sacirovic, who was frenetically cheered on by the fanatical audience in Belgrade, with a 3-2 judge's vote. He won his first world title with it.

At the Pan American Games in Puerto Rico in 1979 , Adolfo Horta won the title two weight classes higher, in the lightweight. In the final he defeated while Roberto Andrino from Puerto Rico on points. In 1980 he went to the Olympic Games in Moscow as a high favorite . He started there in featherweight. Adolfo Horta, who was an excellent technician, who boxed very variably and spectacularly, was slim in shape and was relatively large for the weight classes in which he started, which always brought him a range advantage, initially also lived up to this role. He beat the Swedes Odd Bengtsson (5: 0), Titi Corcel from Romania (5: 0) and Luis Pizarro from Puerto Rico (5 :) in Moscow on points. In the semifinals he came to a fightless victory over the Poles Krzysztof Kosedowski and faced Rudi Fink from the GDR in the final . He couldn't get on with Fink, who was half a head shorter than Horta. Probably underestimated him too. In any case, at the end of the fight, the judges gave Rudi Fink the point victory with 4: 1 judges' votes. For Adolf Horta only the silver medal remained .

Adolfo Horta overcame this disappointment relatively quickly, in 1981 he won the Featherweight World Cup in Montreal . He defeated Samson Khatchatrian from the USSR clearly on points in the final battle . He continued his winning streak at the 1982 World Cup in Munich . He celebrated five wins there in featherweight and was world champion for the second time . He achieved the following results: points winner (5: 0) over Peter Konyegwachie , Nigeria, knockout winner 1st round over Stefan Sjöstrand, Sweden, demolition winner 2nd round over Park Chul-Kim, Korea , point winner (4: 1) over Richard Nowakowski , GDR and points winner (5: 0) over Rawsalin Otgongayar, Mongolia . In the same year he won again in Havana at the Central America and Caribbean Championships in featherweight. He beat his final opponent Sammy Fuentes from Puerto Rico clearly on points.

In 1983 and 1984, Adolfo Horta won twice in so-called Challenge matches in Reno and Los Angeles against the strong American Bernard Gray . In Reno by points (5-0) and in Los Angeles by breaking off in the 3rd round. In 1983 he won the featherweight title for the second time in Caracas at the Pan American Games . His final opponent there was Santos Cordona from Puerto Rico, against whom he won safely on points.

In 1984 Adolfo Horta lost the chance to become Olympic champion due to political decisions. It is well known that the so-called socialist states boycotted the Olympic Games in Los Angeles . The athletes suffered. Adolfo Horta won the featherweight game in the alternative "friendship games" held in Havana, in which the socialist states were at the start. He defeated Rawsalin Otgongayar by breaking off in the 2nd round, Frank Rauschning from the GDR on points (5: 0), Jo Ren Sik from North Korea by KO in the 2nd round and Serik Nurkazow from the USSR just by points (3: 0) 2).

In 1985 Adolfo Horta also started in Germany . At the Chemistry Cup in Halle (Saale) he won the lightweight with a demolition win in the 3rd round over Nerguin Enchbat from Mongolia. This year it became clear for the first time that he was not immune to defeat either. He lost namely in the final fight of an international tournament in Bydgoszcz / Poland the final fight against Orzubek Nazarow from the USSR on points (0: 5) and was defeated a little later at the Strandja tournament in Sofia against the local Christo Furginow also on points.

At the 1986 World Cup in Reno , however, he was well prepared again. He started in the lightweight and celebrated five points wins in a row. In his first fight he won over Michele Cardanello from Italy with 5-0 judges' votes. In the following fights he won only 3: 2 judges votes. These were the fights against Fernando Maldonado from Puerto Rico, Daniel Maero from Romania, Orzubek Nazarow and in the final fight against Engels Pedroza from Venezuela . With that he won his third world title, albeit a little happily. It was the third victory in the third weight class after winning the 1978 bantam and 1982 featherweight division.

After winning this title, Adolfo Horta resigned. He has 319 wins and only lost 27 fights in his playing days.

After boxing

After his boxer career, Adolfo Horta became regional trainer in Camagüey and was also active twice as a trainer in Mexico for longer periods of time. He died on November 28, 2016 at the age of 59 in a hospital in Camagüey of complications from a stroke .
