Johnny Bumphus

Johnny Bumphus (* 17th August 1960 in Tacoma , Washington , USA ; † 31 January 2020 ) was an American boxer in the Light Welterweight .

Life

Johnny Bumphus grew up in Tacoma but lived in Nashville while he was a boxer . He became junior world champion and was nominated for participation in the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow, but did not take part because of the Olympic boycotts.

He completed a total of 31 professional fights, of which he won 29, including 20 knockout victories, and lost only two. On January 22, 1984, he defeated Lorenzo Garcia in the fight for the vacant WBA world title. When he first defended his title in June of that year, he lost the world championship belt to Gene Hatcher . In 1987 he fought again for a world title, this time that of the WBC , but was knocked out by defending champion Lloyd Honeyghan in the second round. After that defeat, he ended his career at the age of just 26. He died at 59 years of complications from a heart attack .
