The Oereler Canal is a left tributary of the Oste in the Rotenburg (Wümme) district in Lower Saxony , Germany . Its origin lies in the eastern local area of Oerel .

environment

fauna

The fauna of the Oereler Canal in the moor areas before Bremervörde is mainly populated by so-called "still water species" such as bugs , beetles and various dipteras (two-winged birds) due to the slow flow rate .

Water quality

The biological water quality investigation and the chemical-physical water analysis were carried out in 1997. The Oereler Canal was classified in water quality class III "heavily polluted" (in the section before Bremervörde with a tendency to II-III "critically polluted"). There is a very high concentration of ammonium in the water, as well as increased nitrite and orthophosphate pollution . The Oereler Canal is also contaminated with mud tube worms and red mosquito larvae . (Measurement took place directly under the sewage treatment plant)

The section of the canal in Bremervörde shows similar loads as in the previous tests, but here an increased phosphorus content was found.

The following reasons were given as the reason for the high loads:

  • Process of the pond sewage treatment plant Oerel
  • boggy catchment area with agricultural use
  • (surface) drainage taking place in the urban area

geography

The Oereler Canal is created from several drainage ditches in the eastern part of Oerel. The main amount of water, however, is supplied by the “Oerel pond sewage treatment plant”. It briefly runs in Oerel along the Fahrenkamp road and then continues in a north-easterly direction. In the western area of Bremervörde, the Oereler Canal meets Kreisstraße 102, runs through the residential area near Dürerstraße and then past the Bremervörde school center (near the primary school, the secondary school and the vocational schools ). In the center of Bremervörde, the canal meets Gnarrenburger Strasse and then flows into the Oste in about 600–700 m near a footpath and cycle path.

The Oereler Canal runs in straight sections with - in some cases - deep sections and steep banks.

expansion

In 2007, part of the Oereler Canal was repackaged, which means that there are wooden boards on the left and right of the banks of the canal, which are held in place by wooden sticks. This measure is intended to prevent the bank from slipping.

Trivia

The Lower Saxony State Agency for Water Management, Coastal Protection and Nature Conservation lists the Oereler Canal as water bodies "WK 30027 - Oereler Canal Upper Course" and "WK 30028 - Oereler Canal Lower Course" and classifies them as "Water without priority".
