There he was able to defeat in the preliminary round Micah Duke and in the quarterfinals again Nordine Oubaali, before he was eliminated in the semifinals against Robeisy Ramírez and won a bronze medal in the flyweight division. Ireland achieved three medals , along with Paddy Barnes's bronze light flyweight medal and John Nevin's silver bantamweight medal. Conlan's flyweight medal was the first Olympic medal by an Irish boxer in this weight class since Hugh Russell's bronze medal in 1980.
He ended the 2013 European Championships in Minsk by winning the silver flyweight medal after a narrow final defeat against Andrew Selby. Previously he had defeated Narek Abgaryan, Sergey Loban and Owik Ogannisjan . At the subsequent World Championships in 2013 in Almaty , he already started in bantamweight and was eliminated in the quarter-finals against Wladimir Nikitin after he had previously beaten Krisztián Nagy and Brian Gonzalez.
At the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow , he won the bantamweight gold medal with unanimous wins against Matthew Martin, Shiva Thapa , Bashir Nassir, Sean McGoldrick and Qais Ashfaq .
