Hugh Russell (born December 15, 1959 in Belfast , Northern Ireland ) is a retired British boxer who fought for Ireland at the 1980 Summer Olympics .

biography

Hugh Russell competed as an amateur boxer at the 1978 Commonwealth Games in Edmonton for Northern Ireland . In the flyweight he was able to win the bronze medal. At the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow , the Northern Irishman did not appear for the British but for the Irish delegation . In the flyweight tournament he was able to move into the semifinals after victories over Samir Khenyab from Iran, Emmanuel Mlundwa from Tanzania and Jo Ryon-sik from North Korea. There he was defeated by the Bulgarian Petar Lessow and thus won the bronze medal.

In 1981 Russell, who started for the Holy Family Boxing Club from Belfast, began his professional career. In October 1982 he defeated Davy Larmour in Belfast and became Irish bantamweight champion . The fight was also a qualifying fight for the British Championships, which the Northern Irish won in 1983 in bantamweight by defeating defending champion John Feeney . In the two following years he was British champion, but in the flyweight .

1985 Russell ended his career as the undefeated British flyweight champion.
