Petar Lessow ( Bulgarian Петър Лесов , English Petar Lesov ; born September 12, 1960 in Rakovsky , Plovdiv Oblast ) is a former Bulgarian boxer. He became Junior World Champion in 1979, Olympic Champion in 1980 and European Champion in 1981 and 1983.

Career

Petar Lessow started boxing at the age of 14 and completed an apprenticeship as a car locksmith. The 1.68 m tall flyweight boxed for CSKA Sofia and won several national championships, including in 1980 and 1981.

In 1978 he started in the light flyweight division at the 5th European Junior Championships in Dublin . There, however, he was defeated in the quarterfinals by the GDR champion and later gold medalist Robert Marx . In 1979 he won the flyweight division, the 1st Junior World Championships in Yokohama . He defeated Hatsumi Soejima from Japan, Kim Kwang-sub from South Korea, János Váradi from Hungary and Nathan Mattos from the USA.

His greatest success came at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow , when he won the flyweight gold medal after victories against Onofre Ramírez from Nicaragua, Hassan Sherif from Ethiopia, Gilberto Román from Mexico, Hugh Russell from Ireland and Viktor Mirozhnychenko from the Soviet Union.

In 1981 he became European flyweight champion and won the silver medal at the 2nd World Cup in Montreal . In 1983 he was again European flyweight champion and won a bronze medal at the 3rd World Cup in Rome .

In 1985 he won the 4th Gee-Bee Tournament in Helsinki .
