Frankie Genaro (born August 26, 1901 as Frank DiGennara in New York City , † December 27, 1966 in Staten Island , New York City) was an American boxer who won the flyweight gold medal at the 1920 Olympic Games.
Life
Genaro won the gold medal in the flyweight weight category at the 1920 Olympic Games, after beating Einar Nilsen from Norway, Jean Rampignon and Charles Albert from France and finally against Anders Pedersen from Denmark. In the same year he became a professional athlete and won two fights against Charlie Phil Rosenberg and Pancho Villa . In 1923 he won the America title in his weight class with further victories against Villa and against Bud Taylor . He lost this title in 1925 when he lost a fight against Fidel LaBarba .
In 1928 he won the title of the NBA (now the World Boxing Association ), but lost it again in his first defense against Emile Pladner . In a rematch a month later, he won against Pladner and was able to recapture the title. He was then able to successfully defend the title against Ernie Jarvis , Yvon Trevidic and again Belanger. He then played against Midget Wolgast , this fight ended in a draw. Genaro then successfully defended his title against Victor Ferrand , Jackie Harmon and Valentin Angelmann . He only lost it again in 1931 after losing to Victor Perez by knockout.
After his defeat, he was unable to win a title and finally resigned in 1934. In 1998 Genaro was inducted into the Boxing Hall of Fame.
