Maikro Romero

Maikro Eusebio Romero Esquirol (born December 9, 1972 in Havana ) is a former Cuban boxer who became Olympic flyweight champion in 1996 .

Career

From 1992 to 1994, 1997, 1999 and 2000 Romero was Cuban champion. In 1996 he won at the Olympics in Atlanta gold medal in the flyweight, he suggested the later American professional world champion Eric Morel in the first round and won the final nearly 12 to 11 against Bolat Schumadilow from Kazakhstan .

Boxing one class lower in the light flyweight division, he also became amateur world champion in Budapest in 1997.

At the Cuban Championship in 1998 he was defeated by Yan Barthelemí , but won the World Cup tournament in Beijing . He also beat the American Brian Viloria on the way to winning the Goodwill Games .

In 1999 he beat Barthelemí nationally and won the Pan-American Games in Winnipeg against opponents such as the Puerto Rican Ivan Calderón . At the World Championships in Houston he was defeated by local hero Viloria in the final and had to be satisfied with second place.

In the Cuban Olympic qualification, he again defeated Barthelemí and Yuriolkis Gamboa . At the Olympic Games in Sydney, however, he was defeated in the semifinals 12-13 to the eventual winner Brahim Asloum and had to be satisfied with bronze.

In 2001 he was beaten in the second round of the World Cup in Belfast by the Ukrainian Vladimir Sidorenko . At the end of 2001 he ended his career.
