Pascual Pérez (* 4. March 1926 in Rodeo Media ; † 22. January 1977 in Buenos Aires ) was an Argentine boxer flyweight.

amateur

Pérez won the flyweight gold medal at the London Olympics in 1948 .

professional

In 1952 he turned professional and won against his first eighteen opponents by knockout . Because of this streak, he is considered the hardest hitting flyweights after World War II. But he was also known for his footwork. Against the Japanese world champion Yoshio Shirai , he boxed a draw in Argentina in July 1954, but won the rematch in Tokyo seven months later on points and thus became the first Argentine world champion in the history of professional boxing. He then even won the third duel with Shirai by knocking out.

In January 1959 Pèrez lost his professional fight against the Japanese Yaoita. However, since it was not an official title fight, he remained world champion. Later in the same year he won the revenge with a knockout victory, but had to go down himself beforehand.

On April 16, 1960, he finally lost his title after nine defenses to the Thai Pone Kingpetch . He even lost the direct rematch prematurely due to a technical knockout in the eighth round.

By 1963 he won another 28 fights in a row, but then lost four times in a short time and ended his career in 1964.

The " Ring Magazine " rated him the third best flyweight behind Jimmy Wilde and Miguel Canto and before Carlos Monzón as the best Argentine boxer of all time. In 1955, Pérez was named Argentina's Sportsman of the Year . In 1995 he was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame .
