Miguel Canto (* thirtieth January 1948 in Merida , Mexico ) is a former Mexican flyweight s boxer .

career

Canto turned pro in 1969 and fought exclusively in his home country until 1974. He already lost his first and third fight by knockout as well as his thirteenth on points, but was subsequently more and more successful with his extremely agile counter-boxing.

He finally got on August 4, 1973 in his fortieth fight the opportunity to box for the vacant WBC world title against the Venezuelan Betulio González , but failed on points. However, since González lost his title to Shōji Oguma the next year , Canto soon had another chance for the title, which he could also use. On January 8, 1975 he finally won the title by winning points over the Japanese on his second attempt.

He then got fourteen title defenses, including twice each against González and Oguma, until he lost the title on March 18, 1979 to the South Korean Chan-Hee Park , the direct rematch ended in a draw. After losing the title, Canto played eight more fights and finally ended his career in 1982.

The " Ring Magazine " describes him as the second best flyweight of all time behind Jimmy Wilde . In 1998 Canto was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame .
