Fidel LaBarba (* 29. September 1905 in Los Angeles , California , USA ; † 3. October 1981 in New York City , New York , USA) was an American boxer in the flyweight and both universal and "the first NBA world champion in Flyweight "and Olympic champion .

Amateur career

The Olympic gold medal conquered the normal boom with wins over E. Warwick , Gaetano Lanzi , Rennis Rennie , Rinaldo Castellenghi and James McKenzie In 1924 in the French capital Paris .

Professional career

Managed by George Blake , the 1.60 meter tall LaBarba made his professional debut with a unanimous victory over his compatriot Frankie Grandetta on October 14, 1924. On August 22 of the following year, already in his 11th fight, LaBarba faced Frankie Genaro competed for the vacant NBA World Championship title (the NBA was renamed WBA in 1962 ) and won over 10 rounds by unanimous decision.

He defended this title with a unanimous victory on points against Georgie Rivers and held it until August 23, 1927.

His last fight, which he played on February 13, 1933 against his compatriot Mose Butch in Pennsylvania , LaBarba won over 10 rounds by a unanimous decision of the judge.

In 1996 Fidel LaBarba was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame .
