Fernando Atzori (born June 1, 1942 in Ales ) is a former Italian flyweight boxer .

amateur

Atzori was military flyweight champion in 1963 and 1964. In 1964 he won at the Olympics in Tokyo the gold medal in the flyweight. In the final he defeated Artur Olech from Poland . In addition, Atzori won the 1964 Mediterranean Games .

professional

In 1965 he turned pro and started with a series of seventeen wins. He fought for the vacant European flyweight title against the French René Libeer . By August 1971 Atzori defended the title nine times: against Libeer, against the Swiss Fritz Chervet , twice against the Scot John McCluskey , twice against his compatriot Franco Sperati , the French Kamara Diop (born in Guinea ), the Spaniard Andrés Sainz Romero and against the French Gérard Macrez .

Chervet succeeded in March 1972 to defeat Atzori and get the European title. In June 1973 the title was vacant again. Atzori knocked out the French Dominique Cesari in the eleventh round and had thus secured the title again. But his old rival Chevet wrested the title from him again. In December of the same year Chevet won against Atzori by knockout in the seventh round. Atzori continued to box for a year, but after scant success, he ended his boxing career in February 1975.
